I really need to get the timing chain cover on my little 302's engine tomorrow, (shooting for possible engine install this weekend)?

Anyway...When I mounted the double roller (Competition Cams) timing gear onto the camshaft (generic) the index (small round stud) does not stick out far enough to engage the eccentric.
I had tried to pull it out (seems like a pressed in fit/maybe on a press). I thought maybe I could get a longer one, but it will not come out! It might be hard to see in the below pictures but the index is only 1/16" protruding through the eccentric.
I've gotten a block off plate and electric pump when I saw this earlier in the week, (but would really like to use the mechanical pump if possible). But can't afford to buy another camshaft at this point either.

Anybody got any ideas, or am I doing something wrong here?
I apologize in advance for the quality of the pictures, (when the flash was on the image was too "mirrored" to make anything out).
Thanks in advance!

And a close up:
