My little 302's fuel pump eccentric-camshaft issue

Post by basketcase0302 »

Guys I need some help please! :D
I really need to get the timing chain cover on my little 302's engine tomorrow, (shooting for possible engine install this weekend)?

Anyway...When I mounted the double roller (Competition Cams) timing gear onto the camshaft (generic) the index (small round stud) does not stick out far enough to engage the eccentric.
I had tried to pull it out (seems like a pressed in fit/maybe on a press). I thought maybe I could get a longer one, but it will not come out! It might be hard to see in the below pictures but the index is only 1/16" protruding through the eccentric.

I've gotten a block off plate and electric pump when I saw this earlier in the week, (but would really like to use the mechanical pump if possible). But can't afford to buy another camshaft at this point either. :(

Anybody got any ideas, or am I doing something wrong here?
I apologize in advance for the quality of the pictures, (when the flash was on the image was too "mirrored" to make anything out).
Thanks in advance!

Pull the cam back out and clamp this stud in a vice, tightly and use two pry bars to draw the cam off the pin. Be careful though because those pins can be hardened and they will shatter if you bend it while removing the cam. Been there and ended up using a peice of hardened pushrod shaft. Some cam kits include the longet pin.

Jamie,

Thanks man!

I'll try this when I get home from work later today.
The pin also appears to be non-hardened steel (shiny instead of a darker color)? Are they made like this to be self-sacrificing?

:woohoo:
For the record...
I was able to fabricate one from a 5/16" Grade 8 bolt one quarter of an inch longer, fit like a glove!
I'll try to get the pictures of it uploaded tomorrow.

I would use some lock-tite on it. Is that an old one piece eccentric? I have one laying around but have not seen on on an engine since the 289 I used to have in a Jeep

The index can't go anywhere as the timing gear retaining bolt washer covers it to hold it into the cam. The bolt got lock-tite for sure.
Yes, it's a one piece eccentric. My "little 302" is about half 289 / half Bronco and a hodgepodge of the many years of 302 parts I have laying around.

Guess you are right about that. Been a while since I have messed with one. Did you say you got it fixed using a grade 8 bolt? Just use the solid shoulder of the bolt or the threaded area?

is it possible for you to measure the lift capacity of that eccentric lobe? trying to figure something out related to eccentric lobe lift.

What brand of cam was yours?
I have no earthly idea! It was what was in the "rebuilt" engine when i bought it years ago.
I know I'm very concerned about it. I've got a few pictures of it in my photobucket.

I know I have a one piece eccentric around here someplace. Is there a measurement I can take from the center bolt hole to the farthest outside measurement that would help you? I have a vernier caliper and a couple of micrometers.
