Ignition
I would say ignition switch, it's gotta' get power to the coil to stay running.
Get it shut down by pulling the coil wire from the coil.
Then pull the ignition switch out of the dash to troubleshoot.

A volt meter is the easiest way.
With the ignition switch in the off position, see if you have power to the + on the small wire on the ignition coil. If the ignition switch is off and you still have power there, your switch is probably shorted. They do fail from time to time.
Here's a very good wiring diagram of the ignition circuit on your truck:

Just a thought.
Could a worn neutral safety switch cause the same problem?

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

It could be a stuck starter solinoid / relay ,tap it with something.
What they can do is feed power to the coil by the start circut.

I've also had them keep cranking , even with key off .

Maybe, but try unplugging the small wire on the solenoid/relay and see if that helps. :2cents:

Ok I have power to coil with key off or on.
When key in run position I get nothing unless I jiggle neutral safety switch.
then it just keeps cranking unless I disconnect positive terminal on battery, but engine stays running untill I dissconect coil wire.

Also, new cap/rotor, plugs and wires, starter relay, coil, and battery
I have 3 wires coming from ignition through firewall
1 goes to coil
1 is ground
the 3rd is white i think that went the electric choke?
when key is in on position the white wire has pulsating power going through it, any thoughts.
