Stripped head bolt hole

Post by OldRedFord »

A while back I stripped out a head bolt hole on my 460. Havent fixed it yet. Just thinking about running a tap in the hole to clean the threads and call it done.

What do you think?

That should work.
There are two different length head bolts ,make sure you don't put a short one in a long hole.
I did that once , it's amazing how much torque a few threads will hold before they pull out.

I agree with the two above. It doesn't look stripped out, a tap may be all you need to clean it up.

However, if it really is stripped out and wont torque down, wouldn't a heli-coil be the correct fix? You wouldn't want the head gasket to eventually start leaking coolant or blow out around the cylinder.

It looks like you've pulled out the top two threads, probably from using a bolt that's too short.

Make sure you've got the right length bolt, and you shouldn't have any problems.
Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something.--Plato
Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Thats what I did. I used the wrong length head bolt for that hole.

The only damage is to the top few threads. The rest of the threads are undamaged.

I wouldn't sweat it. Chase the threads with a tap and select the correct length bolt this time :D
