I have a 302 V8 with a three speed manual transmission. What flywheel should I have?

Depends on the year of the engine. In '81 all 302s changed from the 28 oz. imbalance with a 157-tooth flywheel to 50 oz. imbalance with 164-teeth flywheel and a 34-oz damper.

How can I tell what year the engine is?

I'd suggest finding the casting number and date code, located on the right side of the block above the starter.

The actual engine assembly date is stamped in the block deck just below the distributor.

If you get the date code then you just need to order a flywheel for that particular date engine.

D80E-6015-E is the casting number above the starter.

You need a flywheel for a pre-81 302. Where is your existing flywheel?

Still in the truck. I suspect the PO used the same flywheel that was on the 240 6 cyc that was in there. Not sure if that was the correct flywheel or not.

Why are you questioning the flywheel?

Do you have a vibration? Is the clutch slipping?

More info on your situation or specific issue/problem would be helpful!!

Right now you are just guessing. Pull your flywheel, get the part number off of it and go from there.

Original 302 had a vibration. After that engine failed installed a O/H Jasper engine. Vibration was much better but still present. Took it to the shop last weak after the vibration got stronger. So far have found a leaking rear main seal, broken engine mount on the right side. I suspect the culprit is the flywheel because it's the only part that hasn't been changed. I'm guessing that the flywheel vibration is to blame for both the seal and the broken engine mount.

Unless oil on the flywheel/clutch can cause a vibration.

If you want to tell for sure what flywheel you need, there is a number on the front throw of the crankshaft 2MA = 81 and earlier crank, 2MAE = 82 and later crankshaft. If your block has a one-piece rear main seal, it should have the later crank.
