Ok everything thing is ready for setting the timing and such ... I have a few questions.. I tried to do as much research as possible before I ask questions here but still I have many lol...

1. I have turned the motor by hand until I felt air push my finger out of the spark plug hole of cylinder #1... I looked at the harmonic balancer and it is at 10 on the btc side.. so, crank it the rest of the way until it is exactly on TC?

2. I borrowed a timing light from the local parts store..... Everything I read said time the engine when it is warmed up and at idle... Cam breakin requires not being at idle but in the cam break-in instructions it says to time the motor.. What do i do?

3. In regards to the timing light (it came with no instructions). Do i hook the part that goes on the spark plug wire to the wire part itself or the bigger boot type part that goes over the spark plug (it seems snug on here but does go on)??

4. i had not marked my distributor when i took it out (self slap).... with the motor at tdc what i have read says put the distributor in with the rotor pointing to the firing position 1.. do i determine this by putting on the cap and marking a spot on the housing and use that to see what the rotor is pointing to?

5. Also, I couldnt find anywhere what my initial timing should be set to... Seems everything i read says a different number. Anyone know? and how do i get it set to that initial timing and such?

butterflies galore are living in my gut right now.... Im so nervous about this working out that i can hardly see straight.

anyhow im kinda lost in regards to timing... Any and all help is greatly appreciated and thank you all very very very much for all the help that got me this far!!!!!!!!!!!

attached is a photo of the timing light plug wire clamp and my goofy idea of where it could go... It seems to tight to go on the spark plug boot. and seems kinda loose where it is in the picture.

Side note: the parts store owner is loving to make fun of me as a "Ford Guy"... I cant wait to take my truck down there sounding and running sweet!!!!! I figure the Chevy guys are just jealous cause our trucks are far better looking!

Exactly right!!

Once you get it cranked, move the distributor back and forth slightly until is sounds best. That will be close enough for camshaft break-in. Once you've run it for the break-in, then you can set the timing correctly.

3. In regards to the timing light (it came with no instructions). Do i hook the part that goes on the spark plug wire to the wire part itself or the bigger boot type part that goes over the spark plug (it seems snug on here but does go on)??

Just put it over the wire itself. It most likely will not be a snug fit.

4. i had not marked my distributor when i took it out (self slap).... with the motor at tdc what i have read says put the distributor in with the rotor pointing to the firing position 1.. do i determine this by putting on the cap and marking a spot on the housing and use that to see what the rotor is pointing to?

I don't know the timing specs. Maybe someone with a small block can chime in here.

CHILL!!! We all get butterfiles when starting an engine for the first time, no matter how many we work on. That's a GOOD thing. It makes you think hard to remember whether or not you tightened that little screw...

anyhow im kinda lost in regards to timing... Any and all help is greatly appreciated and thank you all very very very much for all the help that got me this far!!!!!!!!!!!

Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something.--Plato
Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

ok currently fighting a very small water leak off the water pump bottom hose.. i keep playing with it and it doesnt want to go away....

ok i think i have the dist in correctly.. ignore the line on the side that the rotor isnt pointing to.. for some reason i couldnt get it to go down in if pointed to that one... although the vacuum is pretty much in the same spot as it was before.

There is room to rotate the dist back and fourth but not a lot... Also, the dist seems to be up a bit still and it doesnt really seem to want to be coaxed down any further... should i just use the the bolt/retainer to pull it in the last bit?

NO!!! Move the crank one way or the other till the opening in the bottom of the distributor engages the hex shaft for the oil pump correctly while you push down on the distributor. If you use the bolt to pull it down you are going to do some serious damage.

ok i looked at the retainer again.. looks like i intended on putting it upside down... here are a couple pictures.. if it goes the way i think it does then im set other than figuring out the goofy lower radiator hose leak.

what do you think?

Also, don't forget that the wires will need to be moved for correct firing order if they have not already been.

first picture looks to me to be bottom of the retainer as it looks like there is a mark from the dist on it... and second picture appears to have the mark on the bolt on it...
