1. I have turned the motor by hand until I felt air push my finger out of the spark plug hole of cylinder #1... I looked at the harmonic balancer and it is at 10 on the btc side.. so, crank it the rest of the way until it is exactly on TC?
2. I borrowed a timing light from the local parts store..... Everything I read said time the engine when it is warmed up and at idle... Cam breakin requires not being at idle but in the cam break-in instructions it says to time the motor.. What do i do?
3. In regards to the timing light (it came with no instructions). Do i hook the part that goes on the spark plug wire to the wire part itself or the bigger boot type part that goes over the spark plug (it seems snug on here but does go on)??
4. i had not marked my distributor when i took it out (self slap).... with the motor at tdc what i have read says put the distributor in with the rotor pointing to the firing position 1.. do i determine this by putting on the cap and marking a spot on the housing and use that to see what the rotor is pointing to?
5. Also, I couldnt find anywhere what my initial timing should be set to... Seems everything i read says a different number. Anyone know? and how do i get it set to that initial timing and such?
butterflies galore are living in my gut right now.... Im so nervous about this working out that i can hardly see straight.
anyhow im kinda lost in regards to timing... Any and all help is greatly appreciated and thank you all very very very much for all the help that got me this far!!!!!!!!!!!
attached is a photo of the timing light plug wire clamp and my goofy idea of where it could go... It seems to tight to go on the spark plug boot. and seems kinda loose where it is in the picture.
Side note: the parts store owner is loving to make fun of me as a "Ford Guy"... I cant wait to take my truck down there sounding and running sweet!!!!! I figure the Chevy guys are just jealous cause our trucks are far better looking!
