How are these comression test numbers?

Post by SoCalExile »

Just put a compression tester on my 400M, the compression numbers are (from #1-#8) 95-115-100-105-110-90-95-90. It's within the tolerance that the Ford BB engine rebuild book gives (no cylinder below 75% of the highest reading). But overall, how are these numbers?

Although, after the test I put a light on it and it seems the advance slipped from 8* to 2*. When I adjusted it back the motor ran a lot smoother (go figure) with less tapping.

For a 400M is is okay. My 390 is a 10.25 compression car engine and I got 120-110-120-100-120-75-120-110

Those numbers sound fine, maybe some slight wear, but probably nothing major. My 4BT runs 475 +/-1 on all 4! Had to gloat.

It's been a while since I did a comp test, but those sound really low. I'm thinking my mild 360 rebuild was putting out 120-130 cranking compression. It's been a couple of years, but I think the 390 I'm running in my 72 at 10:1 was almost dead on 175 with all 8. None of them varied more than 1 or 2 psi either way. Maybe I'm suffering from a brain cramp, but I'm pretty sure of those numbers. The 390 is running a pretty aggressive cam, too. A comp 288R.
