Running Too Rich?

Post by t_doody »

I had the Carb adjusted last week on my 72 Ranger, and I am not quite sure it's where it needs to be. I still have to pull the choke out when I am sitting idle in traffic because it revs to low and slow.

I bought this truck off of craigslist last week so I know very little about the truck itself. When I have a chance I will post some pictures with my questions.

Is there a way to tell what kind of carburetor I have?

How do I adjust it?

Sorry for all the newbie questions, I am not very mechanical and I am learning along the way.

Thank You for your help!

usually there is a tag on the top of the carb. that will tell you alot abotu the carb. there are also some number usually on a ford 2bbl carb ont he drivers side i think. they might tell you the size of jets? it may read soemthing like 1.21

most usually though through the years the tags get worn out and get lost or never replaced. or something like that.

I do know for sure that it's a 2 barrel.

The Engine is 390 V8 automatic.

Wouldn't pulling the choke out richen up the fuel mix? Wouldn't that mean the carb is lean?
Take a look under the front of the carb and you should see two screws under there a couple inches apart.
Back each one out about 1/4 turn and see how it runs
It has been many years since I have adjusted a 2v Autolite so keep track of how many turns out you go so if it gets worse you can go back to where it is

If it has backfired when cold the Power valve could easily be blown and leaking fuel into the intake making you real rich.

No back firing yet thankfully!

When it's cold in the morning I pull the choke and drive like that until it warms up, then I have no problem starting it with the choke in. I have just noticed though that when I drive after it's been warmed up, and been warm when I slow down or I am sitting at a stop light I still have to pull the choke out otherwise I will die because it's idling slow.

I give it a whirl with the screws and let you know how it goes!

Car on and warm. Idle speed and idle fuel mixture done while normal temp. Choke adjustments done when cold.
