Changing timing chain and sprockets

Post by Gorilla187 »

Hey guys I'm new here and just want to say this is one of best sites for these trucks I have ever seen.
Well anyways to my dilema, I have a 1972 f100 with a 360 that I bought. The previous owner didn't know why it wouldn't start and after a day or two of troubleshooting we narrowed it to the timing chain jumpin. Tore the engine down and sure enough the top sprocket was was extremly worn down. I'm tryin to put a new one on there but for the love of god I can't take the lock that's holdin the bottom sprocket off. I've hit it with the hammer and a screw driver and it doesn't budge at all I was wondering if you guys had any ideas.
Thanks the help is really appreciated

the key? oil it up and let it sit i guess. which way have you been hitting it. hit it from front to backside to side will jamb it or mess it up. if you hit it from the front it might go backwards. but it should get the screwdriver under it if its angled right. you did already get the gear off first didnt you? i fnot tap backwards on the gear and push it back towards the enigne. that may lossen up the key if you have already been knocking it backwards. if the gear is on there and wont coem off becuase the key has been hit backwards and wedged under the gear then try to put a chiesel on the gear and split it. or behind the gear and force it off. that is all i can think of. a gear puller maty be the best soloution though.

The gear is still on there I've pushed it all the way back like you said. I just wanted to see if there was another way of doing it without having to break off the gear. Well imma keep on tryin hopefully I can have her running by tonight. Thanks

if its still losse try a gear puller. as long as the key isnt swelled up the gear should come off.

Well now I'm puttin everything back together but I can't remember how the a/c compressor and power steering went. I got the worst memory.

watch those spacers for the power steering and a/c brackets there are some diagrams on the site that show some of that stuff. the 72 brackets are easier than the 68-70 or so brackets.
