Just wondering if anyone could give step by step instructions to adjust the lifters, or whatever the official name is, inside the valve cover making a tapping noise. It's a 3 yr old 300-6 that's never been opened up since new.
I've been told it was the lifters, valve, tappit, and rocker arm adjustment among other things. Are they all one and the same or a whole bunch of different problems ? Sorry for the dumb question. I'm just no good inside of an engine.

Re: Lifter Adjustment
I would first find an old set of valve covers, to cut holes in so you can adjust them while the engine is running. If not, there is gonna be oil shooting out as you adjust them. Just tighten them until the rattling stops then back off 1/4 turn. Just make sure you don't go past torque spec, don't wanna break a bolt or somethin. If rattling doesn't stop by doing this, then lifters might need to be changed. Relatively simple procedure if needed. This has worked for me a few times in the past.

I'm hoping you MEANT to say, "tighten 1/4 turn" after the rattling stops...Moose wrote:I would first find an old set of valve covers, to cut holes in so you can adjust them while the engine is running. And, by the way, he said it's a 300, so it will only have one valve cover. He won't need a "set"...

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
That's not an oil leak
That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

Re: Lifter Adjustment
My understanding is there is no torque specs. Just whatever stops the tapping. ???
