Have a few questions abou the 390

Post by CO684X4 »

I have a 390 out of my 68 F100 4x4. I am putting it in my 69 F100 2wd. It currently has a front sump oil pan. Do I need a rear sump oil pan to put it in the 2wd? Also what oil filter adapter do I need to put this in the 2wd? Also I have a set of headers that were used in the 4x4 can they be used in the 2wd? Sorry for all the questions. Dont know much about the 2wd's.

4x2 Bumpsides generally accept front-sump oil pans. All of the rear-sump oil pans (that I'm aware of) bonk in to their steering linkage.

Is your front-sump pan a factory, Ford oil pan? Some aftermarket pans won't fit (that's why I'm asking).

I'm actually not aware of an oil filter adapter that won't work, but you'd probably be best off if you used one of the horizontal, truck-type filter adapters. The vertical type will still work, but you'll need to use a stubby (3/4 quart) oil filter with it to clear the crossmember. If you're curious to see photos of this and hear about specific part numbers, let me know and I'll provide that!

I can't help you with this one--sorry! :)

It is an aftermarket oil pan. Here is a pic of the pan. Guess I will have to test fit it to see if it will work. I have the vertical oil filter adapter. So if I use a shorter filter I should be ok?

How i understand it is that the vertical oil filter is from a car 390, and that is what Robroy is (was?) running. A vertical filter should work fine.

i think you have solved all the problems with using that oil pan. exhaust is the only one i can think of. unless you cant reach the drain plug. as far as the oil filter adapter. horizontial is the right one for a 2wd engine. show me a picture of the one you have i might just trade you for the correct one.

Thanks for that photo of the pan! Indeed, you'll need to test it. But my guess based on the photo is that it will work fine! It doesn't look much deeper than the factory front sump pan.

I think this is the case. I also have (had) a vertical oil filter adapter in my truck, and I used a WIX 51068. Here's a photo of how the WIX 51068 looks next to a stock oil filter:

And here's the thread that covers this issue--note that it was Flyboy2610 who taught me about this short filter trick! What a guy! Note that it starts on the second page.

One benefit of the vertical adapter and short filter is that you'll spill less oil during oil changes (I think).

Indeed! That's my understanding as well.

The pan looks like it will work to me.

I believe the headers are completely different...

If the headers would work I don't think they would make 2 different versions. (2wd vs 4wd)

negative the 4wd headers will not work tied this out for my self they seem to fit just a little differnt and it is enough not to work, and causes a big headache.
