I have one of the Mallory replacement sets in my '68 fairlane in the original distributor. The good, it's a simple kit, three wires, two to the coil, one to a ground. The bad, uses a mallory rotor with the optical window and they are difficult to find sometimes.

Pertronix Ignitor. Fits under the cap and retains a stock look. If you can afford the price jump get the Ignitor II.

Duraspark! Or, use the Duraspark distributor to trigger a MSD 6AL and Blaster SS coil like I did.

Randy,

The Pertronix ignition has been in my truck for many years now, no problems at all. The Duraspark is also a proven electronic ignition that's dependable, (I've also ran it for over 20 years now).

Economically and simplicity...I'm stayin' with Pertronix.

I'll be the one guy that has had trouble with Pertronix. Burned up two Ignitor IIs and a regular Ignitor. Same rig, same setup, all wired correctly.

However, lots of guys have great success with them.

When I put the pertroix in the 360 I was told that if I used any coil that put out more volts than a regular stock coil it would burn it up in no time.

michael,
any coil that put out more volts than a regular stock coil it would burn it up in no time.
An important part of the pertronix install is to measure the voltage to the distributor.
I had to install an external ballast resistor on the 71' Ranchero when we did the install on it last year.

I don't have any experience with any of the other ones but I put the Duraspark on my 390 and it works great. If you are looking for "good quality/value" than my sugestion would be to go with the Duraspark. Lots of info here on that and step by step directions on how to do it.

Funny part about that is I bought the damn Pertronix coil with the first Ignitor II. After I toasted the second one, I swapped back to my stock coil and killed the third, which was an Ignitor I. Each time, they ran for a little while, but...I'm completely done with 'em.

The Duraspark/6AL works great.

Many choices out there. YOu can alos use the MSD 6 box with the points distributer. The points are only used as a switch withno current andare supposed to last a real long time lke that butI have never tried it. Just another option.
Cheapest way might be the durapsark set up either using the stock box or a HEI 4 pin Module hidden somewhere. The 4 pin takes the place of the dura spark box and is supposed to be able to handle any coil and input voltage with or without a resistor wire in line.
Never used the Pertronics. Heard a lot of good things about them but also know a guy that had one burn up on him using everything that was recommended.
I have used the crane cams point illiminator kit with success at the time but have not heard from the owner in a while now

I have a Mallory Hyfire box on my truck and it to only uses the points as a switch. Easy hook up but needs 12 volts to coil at all times to work right. Only have to change points when the rubing block wears out. Puts out a hot spark and has been on my truck for 20 years.

Kind of a novice question, but...
when getting ready to order the system (I am looking at the Ignitor II) how do you tell the difference from single point, dual point mechanical advance or dual point vacuum advance? I really want to ensure I order the correct item. I do not know what the year of 351w in my 67 is.

The number of points under the distributor cap. 351w was never offered factory in a '67.
