The block is not a fresh bore.

It's possible that it's worn enough to need another bore.

Okay fellas. I was thinking the same thing, about the price. I would REALLY love a spare motor to practice and learn on, and for fifty bucks... I could learn about "boring" and tolerances... LOL!
So when someone bores an engine, this means we need bigger diameter pistons, or bigger rings, to put it back together? Why is this a bad thing? I saw an old wood splitter that had a piston, the size of a big coffee can!! LOL!
I really don't mean to sound so ignorant, but I really need to understand things before I get a mental picture.

Prime example... I have heard people talk about these bumpers, but always stood with a stupid look on my face... UNTIL NOW... I can see what people were talking about now! HAHA!
Thanks man!

You'd need bigger pistons and rings. Noting wrong with doing it, it's just that you can do it so many times or bore it out to it's max after which the engine is scrap.

Ya, I guess one would need a little space between the cylinders. Who decides when the bore is too excessive? Is there a factory limit or metalurgic determination for this?

A good machinist would make the call. Also sonic checking the cylinder wall thickness. Eventually the wall of the cylinder will be too thin to hold up. Too much overbore could result in a cracked cylinder and water getting into the cylinder bore.

there is usually a factory spec on the block type

Would this stuff all need to be fabricated, after a bore, or do pistons come in different sizes like shoes? I know one could bore a cylinder to a certain spec so that a certain size piston would fit, but who does all this math? I would love to try this, but would be SOL if I got half way through, and had to pay a mechanic and a machinist, and a mathmatician to finish the job for me! HAHA!
And yes I agree, that guy does have a lot of stuff! Most guys think this stuff is lined with gold, I guess having bought parts right from the ford garage at one point, I know these trucks arent THAT valuable! The only REAL value is the PERSONAL value. My truck is like an old family member!

Pistons, Rings, and bearings all come in .010, .020, .030, etc oversize diameters for use in rebuilding engines. If you bore a cylinder out .020 you will have to get .020 over sized pistons and rings.

Same goes if you grind a crankshaft, grind it down .020 to clean it up, then you need .020 over sized bearings.... All available at a parts store.

All the work to bore a cylinder or grind cranks requires specialized machines and very detailed measurements. It isn't likely that a person could machine stuff in their garage. The local machine shop is there to do the math and work for you.

Heres a video of some machine shop services, at about 2:00 in they show cylinder boring.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAfdq217 ... re=channel

COOL video!!! I really enjoyed that !
Thanks for posting that Knightfire. I see now that replacing rings and bearings and all that doesn't need to change sizes unless you have it bored out, but once one gets an irregularity, then metal needs to be removed. correct?
