1980 F350 460 Swap

Post by RustyBolts »

I realize my truck is a bit newer than most on this site, but I was hoping that there is somebody here that can help me. I have a 1980 F350 that originally had a 400 in it. When it blew, my Grandpa rebuilt a 460 to put in there. The thing that stopped him was motor mounts. I want to get this truck back together and running so bad i can taste it! I saw in the Summit catalog where Trans-Dapt has "complete" motor mounts for $111.95, but, I'm a bit leary of them. In that case, what all do I need to change out, in order to make my 460 rest comfortably in the 400's place, and basically make it a "factory" job? For the record, the 460 was not available in these trucks from 1980-1982.

The first thing that comes to mind is towers & mounts. The 400 & 460 have the same bell housing bolt pattern, so your tranny "should" bolt up, as long as the flywheel matches your specific transmission.

If it was me, I would go to a bone yard/salvage & find a 83+ truck with the 460 & get the engine towers from it. Take out your 400 towers & swap in the 460's.

Then it would be as easy as going to Autozone & getting a set of motor mounts for a 83 F-350 with a 460

Do you know of any place that has the towers available? I've scoured all of our local junkyards, there are several 80-97 trucks there, but none of them have/had a 460 in them. :help:

E bay or craigslist would be my next stop. I would also call around to the junkyards around your area. Even if you have to drive an hour or so to get to them.

That's not unusual. Shipping can be pricey.

The thing is, this has all six pieces, which you will definitely need, and they're factory.

Even with shipping, that's still probably less than it will cost to make phone calls and drive a couple of hours to pick up a set that probably won't be as nice as these look.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

Yep, you're exactly right. I'm watching them right now, but there's still 3 and a half days left on them. I'm definitely gonna try bidding on them when they get closer to deadline. Hopefully I'll walk away with them! Wish me luck!
