Re: points keep opening
for me when that was the case or at least it seemed i had to adjust them often it was due to they needed replacement. I pulled mine out and looked closely and they were pitted and worn.... which was hard to see with them installed. They only run about 10 bucks..

Re: points keep opening
If you have a problem with your points frequently coming out of adjustment then there's either a problem with the points not being adjusted correctly or a problem with the distributor. I'd get a rebuilt one and go from there. They only run about $40 or so. Better yet, just get a Durospark distributor and either a Durospark or MSD 6A box and be done with it.

Worn shaft bushings will cause varying point gaps.

Yes, grab the rotor and move side to side, while watching the point gap.

Re: points keep opening
My 390 distributor was doing the same thing. The new points were bouncing and the timing was jumping all over the place. The Distributor was worn out. I replaced the distributor and added an accel points eliminator kit and an accel coil (Accel claims the coil is needed to supply the correct voltage to the kit). Runs great now.
