One thing that has me confused is that the truck will occasionally die at stops now. when I stop the truck will idle for about 30 seconds then the RPMs will drop and the motor will sputter and die unless I throw it in park and gas it back to life. It doesn't do it all the time, but often.
Any suggestions?

Re: Drop in idle speed and stalling problem.
Had similar problems with my ´71. So far the only problem was that the idle speed was too low.

Thing is, you can smell that the carb is running rich.

Check your power valve and float level.
You may also want to verify that the choke is opening fully.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Turns out the carb is filling up with gas to the point that it's overflowing through two holes on the top near the breather. I checked out the float earlier and it seemed to be adjusted ok.

Re: Drop in idle speed and stalling problem.
Check to see if you have any trash in the needle and seat.
Also, if you've got a composite float, replace it with a new one, preferably brass.
The composite floats sometimes deteriorate or get a nick in them, then absorb fuel like a sponge. They may look fine, but if you compare the weight of a used one vs. a new one, you'll find a world of difference.
