Oil Pan Scavenger Hunt Find - What the hell are these?
I'm hoping these are pieces of an old timing set, what say you?

I say wash them with soap and water (if nothing else) and get a better look at 'em, then decide? ;)SoCalExile wrote:I'm hoping these are pieces of an old timing set, what say you?

They are the nylon teeth(makes the gear quieter) of an original linkbelt timing gear.

I would say that motor needs a timing set, to me it looks like plastic that used to be on the upper timing gear. see how much play there is in the timing chain, ive found the same thing in a pan a time or two and it was the upper gear sheading its plastic. Be sure to clean the screen on the pick up tube also because ive found pieces on the screen too.

Yeah I yanked the timing cover and oil pan. I bought a Comp Cam timing set to fix the 4* of advance that Ford put in the stock cam.hazelnut wrote:I would say that motor needs a timing set, to me it looks like plastic that used to be on the upper timing gear. see how much play there is in the timing chain, ive found the same thing in a pan a time or two and it was the upper gear sheading its plastic. However, I found a nasty surprise that's a little more serious than the disintegrated gear - a nice ring sheared into the inner side of the timing cover:

The timing set did have some serious slack in it:

There is another ring worn into the other side, where the water pump impeller might be.
So...seeing this, what would you guys recommend I do?

Put a roller chain back in.

The plastic pieces are from a cam gear but not from the one that is on there now. It has been replaced and the wear on the cover might be from before the chain and gears where replaced. I looks like the fuel pump excentric doesn't have any wear on it.

You need to double-check to make sure there's no wear on the camshaft thrust plate.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
That's not an oil leak

Was wondering about that, couldn't see where they'd be from looking at the gears. :)

now wait. why does the eccentric look like its doubled up? it should only be a single cup not a double.

Re: Oil Pan Scavenger Hunt Find - What the hell are these?
yup those are definitely the nylon teeth off the original timing set... my guess is if someone that owned it previous to you came in and did a timing set, they didn't bother to drop the pan and get any of that debris out
just found the same deal on my 360 except most of the nylon was still on the gear cause it was the original timing set

As far as the fuel pump eccentric that is a 1 piece unit.. I don't know FE's but on a small block the early blocks had a one piece and somewhere around 69 to 71 or so they went to a 2 piece I think to quiet it down a little.
