302 cooling
I just replaced my water pump with a milodon high flow, matching 160* thermo stat. My radiator is the smaller version, but my fan is from when I had the full size radiator. (it busted and i needed a new radiator all they had was the small). Because of this I dont have a fan shroud. Alright heres the problem. When Im driving its stays at 160 no problems. But when Im sitting it starts creeping up. Ive let it get to 210 before shutting it off. Im running only 50/50 in there right now. Should I make it half water? Any ideas on a fan shroud for it?

Dennis Carpenter has fan shrouds with measurements: http://www.dennis-carpenter.com/pdf/67-79_2009.pdf

if you have no fan shroud the fan must be as close to the radiator as possible. if you have a fan shroud the fan should sit just inside of the shroud. you might be able to get a longer spacer and bolts to move the fan closer.

Re: 302 cooling
I've got a bigger radiator and a ford 6 blade fan with no shroud and stock water pump and I've never seen my 302 get above 180* in the summer time. It usually runs about 160* all year long but I don't think it has a thermostat in it.

Re: 302 cooling
You need to be more descriptive... If you have the old 4 blade fan it's pretty much worthless, a five or seven blade flex fan from a '70's Ford car is great for cooling. A decent working clutch setup is fine too. I wouldn't ru a 160 thermo in anything, 195 was stock.
Jeepgod, the '93 mustangs use a serpentine belt which spins the fan backwards so that may not be a good recommendation for this guy if he's using V belts (I know, the bolt patterns are different too).

I did not put the fan on the truck it does look a little funny and I know that grandpa took pliares and bent the blades some. I know the fan blade was on my brother in laws mustang and it was bad so grandpa said he could fix it and put it on the truck. This truck is full of great grandpa engering when I get it the ac compressor was off a Toyota truck. The power steering brackets are just as classy with some of the bolts heads shaved down to clearence the belt.Ranchero50 wrote:You need to be more descriptive... Re: 302 cooling
A known small radiator and no shroud equals over heating when idling. I am sure a big enough radiator would fix this though.
I would add a shroud.

Just a note.. 160 degrees is too cool. No stat is not good at all, and a 160 degree stat is not much better.
The normal stat temp is 195 degrees. You will have less engine wear, less sludge buildup, and more
efficiency with the stock 195 degree stats.

you're not keeping water in the radiator long enough to cool...it's just running thru it. Try a 180 & see if it helps.
If the truck runs at temp down the road & overheats at a stop, that usually indicates an issue with airflow over the radiator. As mentioned before, a shroud might be in order.
As a metter of fact, i AM trying to keep up with the Jones'

Re: 302 cooling
if you dont put a shroud on it you could put an electric fan on it.
