Newer engine/tranny swap?
I am having issues with my 69's engine and clutch. I am thinking about swapping in a mid 80s to mid 90s 300 with a 5spd. I assume that people have done this. Are there any major difficulties? I assume that I will have to change tranny mounts, and drive shaft length. If I use the old ignition and manifolds on the engine I think it should be a straight forward swap. Any thoughts or experiences?

the dist length was changed on the newer engiens so you cant use a older dist in a newer engine. so you would have to use the newer dist and engine compuiter. transmission moutn would be the one to match the trans i would think.

Fordman, I think you got some bad info there. I've run old points distributors in EFI 300 sixes no problem. The big difference between an efi 300 and a carb one is the efi motors lack anyplace to mount a fuel pump.fordman wrote:the dist length was changed on the newer engiens so you cant use a older dist in a newer engine. so you would have to use the newer dist and engine compuiter. transmission moutn would be the one to match the trans i would think.
If you have the option, the EFI 300 is a straightforward swap and works real good. As in keeping the EFI on it and using it. 87-89 are the easiest 300 six years to swap because the engine wiring harness is almost stand alone.

So I guess by looking at your sig Dustin, you are the guy to ask about putting the 5.9 cummins in my 92 F350 as well? Thanks for the input. I will narrow my search to the late 80s. I was expecting to have to run the old carb intake to keep things simple electrically, but the 87-89 harness is easy to adapt to the old trucks?

Yeah, some Cummins engines have found thier way into vehicles they didn't come in around my place. If you will consider just keeping the EFI I'd be happy to offer any help you needed to do the job.
1) you'll want to buy a decent aftermarket fuel system to run the EFI engine.
2) You can use your in cab tank without any issue.
3) the van 300 sixes had better power steering pumps/brackets, but the pickup engines had cleaner wiring.
4) Every diagram you need is at fordfuelinjection.com

Re: Newer engine/tranny swap?
I purchased my fuel system from bc broncos. They have a low pressure and a high pressure and a acumulating "tank"

After researching I felt that this was the best way for me to adapt efi to my bump and still retain the behind the seat tank. You will have to have a return line added to your tank because the low pressure pump pumps more volume than the high pressure pump does.
Like I said this is what worked best for me.
