Re: Fuel Pump vacuum question
Sounds points related.. I'd slap a new set in and also the condenser and see what
happens. It would be nice if you could adjust the points using dwell instead of gap..
But that requires a dwell meter.. Much more accurate though.

Re: Fuel Pump vacuum question
I rarely used Dwell because you can't adjust them while running so taking a cap off and on all the time for hairline adjustments causes early cap retention problems. If you are going to keep points learn to gap them with a flat feeler gauge.

That was the cool thing about using a uniset in a GM dist., you hook up the dwell meter, open the door and twist your flex-hex screwdriver.Dragon wrote:I rarely used Dwell because you can't adjust them while running so taking a cap off and on all the time for hairline adjustments causes early cap retention problems. Re: Fuel Pump vacuum question
Yep, GM had the right idea on those.. I never gap points.. I want the dwell to be right,
and it's too hit or miss using the gap method alone. It's a pain, but I usually get it right within
2-3 times, so never have had a cap problem.

Re: Fuel Pump vacuum question
That was the one good thing about GMC vehicles. My Accel Dual point used very high RPM GMC style points and the dizzy had rubber stay in place plugs that you pushed the allen wrench thru and adjusted the dual point dwell that way.Because you could not see the points if you missed the set screw you might get shocked, The way it worked I added a separate wire coming outside from each point set with a switch so each set of points could be adjusted separately.

Re: Fuel Pump vacuum question
Alright guys we got it running and drove it around the house some. We replaced the old seats in it, washed it, and cleaned up the interior. The transmission is kind of binding up though. We'll replace the transmission fluid next time we visit my grandma. Hopefully that will help out. Thanks for the help though.
I may post some pictures later.

Re: Fuel Pump vacuum question
Well she runs pretty good now. Not sure if I already mentioned this, but the transmission was binding up. We put some transmission fluid in it and its shifting alot better now. We washed it, cleaned out the interior, and changed the seat out. It looks way better than it did. We found out that the heater unit is leaking inside the truck. Its a good thing we just put water, rather than antifreeze mix, in the radiator in case something like this happened. If anyone has or knows of where to get another heater unit that would be nice. We actually have an ac unit, but we aren't sure what would be involved in putting that in. The truck was my grandpa's, but he passed away this past summer due to cancer. RIP grandpa. He bought it brand new and is the original owner. It still has tobacco gum on the steering wheel from farming. My grandma is thinking about selling it, but she isn't sure yet. I would love to keep it and restore it to the original condition, but I'm still in an apartment, and don't have anywhere to keep it. I already have 2 cars and don't have any more room. This is turning into a build thread, even though we were originally just going to get it running and that was it. haha. Here are some pictures for yaw...

There is still alot of rust on it and the dash is cracked, but it looks pretty good. We have a new dash for it in still in packaging, so we might put that on some time. I guess we'll see if my grandma ends up selling it or not.
How do you post pictures in the thread? I used the img thing and it just says image instead of showing the picture. So I guess yaw will have to click on each picture. sorry. haha.
