Post by f100fordtruck »

How would i go about figuring out what size engine i got? its either a 360 or a 352, I need to try and find out before friday because were going to get a rebuild kit for it.
I'll get it one piece at a time and it wont cost me a dime...

You can measure the stroke, not sure what the stroke is on a 352 but I'm sure someone will come along that does. Good luck with your rebuild .

EDIT: , Thought I saw somewhere that there was a difference between the 352 and 360 stroke .

well according to some sites i found on google the stroke on a 352 and a 360 are the same...

EDIT: We'll have to look at the size of the bore.
390 bore 4.050, stroke 3.786
360 bore 4.05, stroke 3.5
352 bore 4.00, 3.5 stroke
I'll get it one piece at a time and it wont cost me a dime...

352 and 360 is the same stroke of 3.5 a 360 has a 390 Bore of 4.05 where a 352 and 360 is 4 inch. So a 60 over kit would make a 352 into a 360 10 over or a 360 into a 360 10 over with less boring. Most FEs will go to 60 over just some early poor castings failed to allow a 60 over bore.

Here is a little known fact on the driver's side front of the block there is a 3 digit number cast it reads 352 or 501 backwards. No 360 was made during the 352 block designation years, 67 was the last year for the 352 in anything and the 360 started in a 68 in trucks only. 68 cars got 351s to take the place of the 352. So if the engine has the 501 it is the 360 or bigger engines. The 501 blocks have stronger main webbing.

the kit you buy also depends on bearing sizes. they could be standard oversided or undersized. as well you will want the correct ring sizes for the bore of your eninge. it is best to get the engine apart and measure all of those things before buying a complete engine kit. if all you want are gaskets then it doesnt matter. 352 360 390 take all the same gasket sets.

the 352 and 501 numbers will not be on the same block. they are two diferent year castign numbers is all they are. those numbers mean nothing other than to denote the time period when the block was cast.

so the only way to tell is measure the bore size?

Unless it has already been bored 050 then it is a 352 because of the casting series designation of 352. As I said no 501 block were made into a 352 and no 352 series block was a 360. 352 refers to the early castings before 68.

I was scrounging the yards yesterday for 501 series for rebuilds and I cam upon no 352 blocks the yards don't carry anything before 1969.

Unless they went backwards you should have a 360 though. Somewhere along the way though the engine might have been swapped. Both my 68s Well one was a 360 when I got it and one was a transplanted 352. I got the 352 first and I knew it was on my way west from school in the Navy I stopped at home in Denver and popped on my EDC heads S-code intake, Scatter shield and RUG 4 speed from one of my racers in storage. So I got to see. Most people would not rebuild their engines they just pop in another one. My 69 F350 had a 360 but not the original one when I got it.

What is your VIN number the letter after the F10? Also some low compression 390s were left over from the 352 days and got put in trucks as late as 72 as replacement motors at the dealers.

Does it still have a 3 spd with over drive in it? The rear end is supposed to be a 9 inch 3.50 to 1. With 5000 lbs GVW. It is a Short Wheel base 175 hp at 4000 rpm 360 by all the codes.

The closer the rest of the truck is to stock the more likely the engine is still stock.
