Anyone slammed a Thumpr in their 390?
Got everything priced out today for my teardown on the 390 to upgrade to a Comp Cams Flat Tappet Thumpr Cam w/lifters, gears and timing chain and such, all the seals etc etc, project to get underway in about two weeks after the rest of the truck is torn down for some cleanup, has anyone used a split duration Flat Tappet cam from COMP CAMS in their 390? if so, what do you like/disklike about it? just want some opinions and first hand experience shared so I can know what to expect etc

When I did my Cobra 390 I went with a Crane 343941
http://cranecams.com/?show=browseParts& ... e=camshaft
Ran good pulled good mid-range. Relitively mild idle.
Swapped to a Comp XE274. Better low/mid than the Crane but with the 110°LS in was a much louder/noticeable idle. Almost hurt my ears with the sidepipes.

Now with the truck's 418cu.in., being in the truck and a automatic I'm going with a little less duration. Looking for more lowend torque. Was going to go Comp again but decided to go with a Lunati VooDoo 62003
http://www.lunatipower.com/CamSpec.aspx?p=62003
as for the "Thumper", They weren't availible for the FE when I made my choice.
Looking at the smallest (279TH7)
http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDe ... =1484&sb=2
awfull lot of duration with little lift. 107° lobe center will give you that lumpy idle but I think you can get similar but better performace out of the 110° and better low end torque with less duration.

running a manual trans so the whole stall/compression stuff isn't exactly relevant... CONVINCOR linked to all the specs

Re: Anyone slammed a Thumpr in their 390?
I've got headers/exhaust, aluminum edelbrock rpm performer intake and edelbrock afb sitting on top, PERTRONIX FLAMETHROWER billet plug & play distributor and coil and performance Carter Fuel pump, just now starting to feel a flat spot in my cam and my mechanic can get me a deal on this cam kit so thats where we're going, he's been building motors like this for years and years and knows just where to find the sweet spot with them and there's reviews for them all over the internet but unfortuneately the majority come from chev users so thought i'd see how they feel in an FE if anyone had experience with em

If you started to feel a flat spot and it hasn't been there the whole time, then the timing could be off.

Re: Anyone slammed a Thumpr in their 390?
What gear is in the rear end? What kind of goals do you have with the 390?
I would look for something with a bottom end rpm more closer to idle. But that is just me. Only reason I say that is because I am thinking about my vehicle (not the bump tho cause its not done) and most of my street driving I am turning 2500 rpms or less.
