I'm looking for a reasonably priced 429 mini starter to help clear some space inbetween the starter and headers. Can anyone tell me if the mini's like http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ECA-2073/?rtype=10 on Summit will clear up space and still be reliable?
Thank you,
Seth

Re: 429 Mini Starter
Good morning Seth!
I went with a RobbMc mini-starter and have been very happy with it so far! Here's the thread that documents my discovery process--thanks to 67FordKC for letting me know about the RobbMc products.
High torque starters: Powermaster, RobbMc, and NPD.
Here are a few photos of the RobbMc FE starter.

Note that mine has an optional nose cone support, which costs a little extra but is recommended for high compression engines. Also, note that the solenoid is movable on the RobbMc starter--you can rotate it around and "lock it down" at any angle, depending on what clears your headers and engine best.
Seth, let me know if you have any questions about the RobbMc starter! I think you'll really like having a mini-starter installed, and I wish you good fortune with your project.

Re: 429 Mini Starter
I have been interested in those myself for my 460 but have a question. Right now my 460 will usually start with just a bump of the starter like any Ford should do. Will they still do that with a mini-starter or are they a slower gear reduction like a Mopar?

Re: 429 Mini Starter
Good afternoon Clint!
All that said, if you mail RobbMc with your question I'm sure you'll receive and prompt, detailed, and definitive response. It was their quality customer service which really "made the sale" for me.

During the few times I've used my RobbMc starter so far, it did seem to crank the engine over more slowly than the stock Ford starter. But this could be purely my imagination! Since this is the first non-factory starter I've used on any vehicle, I may have been paying more attention to the cranking speed than I have before.cdeal28078 wrote:Right now my 460 will usually start with just a bump of the starter like any Ford should do. Re: 429 Mini Starter
The starter motor is not torquey the reduction gearing gives the impression of a weaker starter. Chryslers used them in the old days Ford Whir Whir Whooom Chryslers Whiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Whoom same amount of time but sounded really weak.
