is this the fast idle set screw? if not, where is it?

On the back side of the choke. Sticking straight up Right by the white bushing.

so, it's that greasy bolt/screw right smack in the middle of my pic, right? the choke seems to do everything it's supposed to except that it idles way to fast when choked.

If the choke cap is turned too far it will idle too fast to because you will be on another step. Your cold idle should be at 1600 rpm if I remember right.

i need to buy a tach. i'll bet it's close to that by ear. i am used to fe's and all mine always had manual chokes, so i'm not used the revs this 302 puts out. i wish it would worm up and quit snowing all the time so i could spend more than a few minutes at a time jacking with this thing.

Figure 'D' on Dagons link. It's upside down and hard to reach. Spray some carb cleaner so you can at least feel for it. The screw in your pic adjusts how fully the thermostatic spring puts the choke on.
