Installing a 391 in a 64 F-350?

Post by danielfire50 »

I am thinking about installing a FT 391 in my 64 F-350 that is if I can find one.
If any one has any information that could help me or if there is any reason I shouldn't use a 391 let me know. I want to know how the 391 is mounted so I can figure out what would be easier to install a 390 or 391.

Really no reason why you can't use a 391, it mounts exactly the same as a 390. For a 64 you would use a timing cover mount and a bellhousing with mounts. Pretty much identical except the trans. If you use a 390 you can use a stock trans but if you go with the 391 you will need to find a trans that is compatible with the bellhousing (391 uses a bigger flywheel thus a bigger bellhousing and since they were made for bigger trucks those bellhousings are made for bigger trans!). If it were me I would go with the 390 for more power in a smaller truck, the 391 is a workhouse not a powerhouse. It won't rev as fast or as high as a 390 so it makes for a sluggish ride by comparison. JMO Hawkrod

Thanks for the info. I had no ideal that they made timing cover and bell housing for 390 that mounts like the Y-block. I want to make this truck a work horse so power is more important to me than fast acceleration.

There are two different sets depending on which trans you have. The front covers are the same but the bellhousings are different. I have both setups in stock. Hawkrod

Bellhousing and timing cover from FE for 61-66 trucks with front and bellhousing mounts (this one is for the older style T98):

Cool! My truck has the T-98.
You stated that have one in stock, so are they for sale?

I can't get on the internet very often so it might be a little while before I can respond again.
Thanks,
Daniel
