Engine swap

Post by J LEE »

What needs to be changed in a '68 f100 to swap it from an inline 6 over to a say a 302 and what would be a good engine to look for.

Here's the first thing to look at:

What transmission does it have in it?

If it is a 240 six put a 300 in it, if its a 300 a 302 would be a step backward in my opinion unless it was a complete SEFI 5.0 swap...

300 6 rules and 18 mpg is nothing to sneeze at. Don't get me wrong I love my 390 and won't remove it for a 240 or 300 6 but if I find a bump side with the 6 I will keep it that way. Then it will be my daily driver and my 390 will become my hill climb tire smoker.

First let me say I have not bought this truck yet but I am 99% sure I will. Please keep in mind it has been parked since '95 but was a running, driving truck when parked.I am not sure which 6 this pickup has in it but the reason I asked is that would be one of the biggest things I would like to do is swap the 6 for a 5.0 out of a fox body mustang and back it with an AOD or a maybe a C4 with a gear vendor OD. It has a manual on the column for a transmission now and I was not sure how difficult this proposed swap would be.

Won't be any harder than any other SEFI swap.

The above linked page should explain the engine stand issues, while I'm not sure about early trucks, my 72 has several holes for the crossmember, if one of them does not work I'm sure you could drill new ones.

To tell the truth it crossed my mind to leave the 6 in it and just put split manifolds on it for a better sound but I just cant resist the good soundin note a 5.0 puts out. Yall know its one of those sounds that if you hear it accelerating up from a stoplight you dont have to look to know its a mustang.

I personally don't give a damn how my rig sounds, just how it performs.

My 1982 has a 300 six and i am going to keep it in the truck. My truck has 4wd and gets 16 mpg and my dad has a 1985 2wd with a 302 it gets 12 mpg. You have more torque and little less horses but it is tough.

In what arena? I know for a fact that the 300 does for towing and work. Also, for fuel milage while still having great usable power.

Now, if you want noise, a fast revving motor or acceleration...then the 300-6 loses.

All depends if your focus is function or form.
