Stood the test of time

Post by f100x2 »

We decided to rebuild the 390 for safeties sake because it had just about 200,000 miles on it and it looked untouched from the day it was made. We took it to an engine rebuilder for a once over and he returned it to us as a short block. He said that the motor had never been opened up before and it still even had the factory nylon timing gear that had long since worn away and it was a god send that the chain didn't jump. So heres the verdict:

rebored and new pistons
all new bearings and seals
all gasket surfaces resurfaced
valve job and hardened seats
New timing gears and chain
new oil pump
new lifters
new cam
and a lot of other things that aren't coming to me right now

All pushrods, connecting rods, crank, and other major parts were in good shape and reusable. Everything was magnafluxed and no cracks on anything. This old FE really stood the test of time and it ran perfect up to the point of the rebuild.

Man Ive drove many of those 200000 engines till 400000 thousand. But I guess that's few and far between. My engine is 33 years old has less than 10000 miles on it. I just had to take the intake off. Man the gasket still said ford lol.

nice to hear of well used, non-abused engines that rebuild in short order.
