Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Re: Motor Ideas
the motor that strikes me is the edsel 410.good running stump puller right from the start .those old edsels were tanks and needed a big torque mill.

Re: Motor Ideas
to turn a 360 into a 390 you need a 390 crank and rods.

Other upgrades on my 360 to 410 conversion included CJ valves and a used performer RPM intake.
Holley 4150 carb 650 CFM (80783). I used a Mellings RV cam but there may be a better cam for your application, I am not up on cam selection.

Re: Motor Ideas
For torque it is hard to match a 385 series (460).

What ever you do dont use "Proformance" for any of your machine work, part purchase,or anything else, just read the horror story another member has been going through,he to is building a 390 fe.its sad the dude has been put through so much BS,and hardship, from a fly by night vendor.(are we allowed to say that?) I hate it when someone gets torn off like that.

Re: Motor Ideas
For your use I would build a 410 (unless a sonic check shows your block will go to std 428 bore, then I would build a 428).
You could also do a stroker rotating assembly from Survival Motorsports (or similar [DSC, Precision Pumps, Keith Craft...]) which might not cost much more than a 410 with forged pistons.
Since you are starting with a 360, you need a complete rotating assembly anyway, might as well make it as large as possible...

Re: Motor Ideas
Gotta jump in here. The 1958 Edsel big engine was what they classed as an "E475" which was the torque of the engine and was stamped on the valve covers. They were tire shredders! But as the recession wore on and the Edsel line was diminished from 18 models in 1958 to 11 models in 1959 and carried on for about 4 months into 1960 and was discontinued. Also in 1958 the "E400" was also available and was the 361 CI engine, also claimed to have 400 ft. pounds of torque. The 'E475" engine was actually a 410 and was available only in the Citation version of the 1958 Edsel. If you can find an old Citation it will most likely have the "E475" engine and they are a VERY desireable engine to have in one of these old bumps. I wouldn't think they would be any more expensive to rebuild, they are externally balanced but WOW what a powerhouse! I could think of nothing nicer than to pop the hood on a bump and right there on the valve covers would be stamped "E475!" It would make those young jack's at a car show scratch their heads clear past their ears! Want history? "Edsel.com"

Re: Motor Ideas
That external balance is why I would avoid building one from scratch. As you would need a 410 or 428 balancer and flywheel. I built two internally balanced 428 race motors and the cost to balance the crank was less than the cost to get the externally balanced flywheel and and balancer rebalanced to the racing weights of the rotating assembly. An internally balanced 410 and 428 requires lead set into the crank weights to increase the counter weight.
