Engine Identification

Post by BillT »

Recently bought a '69 F-350 Wrecker and I have very little Ford experience.

I believe it has the original 360 in it but I would like to verify it. I have recently learned that what I am trying to accomplish is not any easy thing. So far I have learned:

-That the "352" on the front of the block, does not mean I have a 352.

- That the Code "C" stands for the 60's and "9" stands for '69 (in my case) that should be stamped on many of the parts.

-If still there, there should be an Engine ID Tag on the Intake, Coil or possibly under the DipStick area.

- There is a Date Code on the bottom side of the block.

Would like to verify if all of the above info is correct and I'm trying to find out exactly where the Engine Date Code would be loacted at.

Any other helpful info would also be appreciated.

Thanks, Bill

The only way of differentiating between the two, since there are no external markings to tell you what you've got, is to measure the stroke. Simply rotate the crankshaft around until the #1 cylinder is at TDC (top dead center) as indicated at the timing mark. Remove the spark plug and insert a wooden dowel into the cylinder until you hit the top of the piston and make a mark on the dowel. (Use the valve cover lip as a constant reference source.) Then remove the spark plug from the #4 cylinder (when #1 is TDC, #4 is BDC) and make another mark on the dowel. Then measure the difference. A 360 has a 3.50" stroke and a 390 has a 3.78" stroke.
