What do you guys think about Flowtech headers?

Post by 72Highboy »

Hey guys :fr: I pretty sure you seen my posts from time to time. :D Just a Young Gun trying to get his truck up and running, soon it will be all good I hope. After all the stuff I am replacing it better run like a champ.

On top of all the wonderful new parts I have gotten for my truck, I got a crazy gift for news years. A good friend of mine bought me some headers. She really does no alot about trucks and stuff but she got the right specs for the headers. She bought me some Flow Tech Headers and some glass packs. :hd: I have look around online and read good stuff about them but thought I would look to anyone here if they have tried these headers. Hopefully what I read isn't to far off on how the really are but hey they gotta be a lil better than stock, right. :hmm:

Better than stock but...

For headers judge them by the header flange thickness (thicker don't leak as bad) and tubing gauge (16ga not so good, rust out faster or crack out 14ga is better). Other than fit issues that's the biggest thing for me. I think the flowtechs were 1/4" flange and 16ga thin tubing. The headmans were 5/16" and 14ga and last longer.

There are different Flowtech headers available. If they are the basic black painted ones, I think you are correct about the specs. However, the ceramic coated ones are 5/16" flange thickness. I do believe they still have 16 ga tubes, though. I ran some for a while and had no problems with them until I decided to do a little work on the ports, then had to weld the outside. Do NOT try to install them with a manifold gasket. It will not seal. The closest fit I found was a FelPro performance. FPP-1442, I think was the number. They are the blue gaskets. You should be able to get a set for around $25 at a local parts store. They probably came with some, though. Can't remember. Hope this helps.

I should but some gaskets that are the blue type instead of the gray colored gasket that it came with.

If they came with gaskets, they will probably work. Don't remember what mine originally came with. The 1442 is a good gasket, though, IMO. You might also want to get some of the spray copper gasket stuff(?) and coat the gaskets with that before installing. If you are using a stock size starter, I am almost positive the installation will go something like this (at least with the ones I had this worked): Remove existing exhaust system. Remove exhaust manifolds. Unbolt starter and remove. Place header down into position, but don't install any bolts. Replace starter while twisting around the header and holding tongue just right :D . It has to be done just right, but the header should eventually allow the starter to go into place. Bolt the starter up. Bolt the headers up (drivers side should just go right on from the underside of the truck.) You will need 2 people to do this- one on the top side manipulating the header and another underneath working the starter on. And you will get frustrated, but it will work- at least it will unless something is different from what I had.

Sweet thanks a lot I think it will be somewhat like that  but I always forget to put important things on these posts when I create them. I got a 4X4 with a 360, 8) when I said I might have to take the passenger side engine mount off is cuz the headers look like this and when I put it next to the fender it looks like I will have to. :hmm: I am prutty sure I can get them on I was looking to see if I was right or close. I just Replaced everything from my flywheel back to axle so removing a eninge mount and starter wont be to bad.
