Hey thanks! I am off work today so I think I'm probably just going to run to the local bone yard and see if I can't grab a set or at the very least take measurements. They've got more than a few medium duty fords there from the era. Thanks though!

My supervisor at work, who is a welding instructor, told me that when he does cast iron he gets the part nice and hot using his propane grill. Then he welds it, reheats it, and turns the grill off with the part still in the grill. Next morning it has finished cooling, SLOWLY, in the grill and is all done. He says preheating the part, and slow cooling of the part, are the biggest keys to success.

Yeah, I was thinking $50 for the pair would be ok. I've got an ad on craigslist and a prospective source from my wanted ad here, so we'll see.

I asked a freind thats been welding for 30 years about welding on cast iron (exhaust manifolds) and he says the same thing as flyboy 2610 said.He told me that you want to get it up to 400 preheat but not go over 750 when welding.because the weld could crack if the tempture get to hot when welding because the manifold will pull the heat out of the weld to fast.

Could be worse. Those aren't as common as FE manifolds so might just have to bight the bullet. I still think you're not going to notice a difference.

Well I was thinking that even if I find a pair from somebody online for $50, after they are shipped it will be closer to $75, and that's only $25 away from $100 soooo.... :lol:
I'm gonna go scout it out in the morning. Work is slow and I've got a day off so why not. As for noticing a difference you may be right, but I think it would be pretty cool and I still like the idea of it having the exact same back pressure and flow for both cylinder banks. I still don't really know if the pipes will hit the engine mounts, so tomorrow will be a day for measuring if nothing else.
On another note a guy just emailed me with a complete FT with manifolds for $250. I don't really want it, but I asked what cid it is anyhow. I'm not sure if the engine even has holes for the FE mounts. I need to hit the bumpwiki again.....
EDIT: Nevermind, the whole engine wouldn't help me much. Thanks bumpwiki!!!

Yes, but only for the left side. The passenger side still uses a log manifold. I tried to figure out how to maybe modify a drivers side to use on the passenger side but it really won't work.

After my trip to the junkyard today I now know that FT manifolds will not work. The drivers side would be ok I think, but the passenger side would dump out right over the frame rail and leave no room for the pipe to attach, so I've decided to use the later rams horn type 360 drivers side manifold and the car 390 passenger side. Thanks guys!

i think the passenger side for the cars is the same for the trucks. the drivers side is different for cars and trucks.

No they are not. The driver's side is the same. The passenger side is different on cars. The outlet is angled different for clearance reasons. There is no noticeable difference in flow between the two. The pipe will just have an extra bend in it therefore defeating the purpose for changing it to begin with. Not worth the time or money.

Well if you have both a car and truck passenger side manifold sitting on your bench and you have a truck with plenty of clearance back there then why not choose the one that flows better? I'm sorry, but when you compare the two the last cylinder gets much better flow on the car manifold. A slight bend by a competent exhaust fabricator won't negate that, in my opinion.

fordman, here is the difference between the two passenger side manifolds:

You can see where on the truck manifold the last cylinder has to push it's exhaust backward against the other three cylinder's exhaust, then around a corner to make it's way out. The car manifold gives a pretty straight shot to the exit point. I know it's not leaps and bounds better, but it sure looks better to me. :2cents:
