You re-wired it to the correct firing order? (edit: I see you said you did)

Have you tried rotating the distributor while someone operates the starter?

Double check everything, the less you have to spin on it before firing it off for cam break in the better...

i just rotated the engine by hand again and i got a puff of air when the rotor was pointing almost a perfect 180...

If you are sure that it is not 180 out then you can sometimes turn the distributor slightly (as if adjusting timing) while cranking and get it to fire off...

(needless to say be careful here)

Sounds like it could be 180 out...

Seems that every time someone can't get an engine to fire after having the distributor out, everybody thinks it's 180 degrees out.

Most likely, the distributor is one tooth off (maybe two), one way or the other. It's hard to get it to fall into place exactly right, as the distributor shaft has to rotate as it engages with the cam gear, and 99 times out of 100, the oil pump drive is not aligned correctly with the recess in the distributor shaft.

Go back to TDC on #1.

Look at the position of the rotor in relationship to #1 on the cap.

If it's not almost dead on, you've probably missed the timing on the distributor.

Pull the distributor back out, and turn the distributor one tooth in the direction it needs to go to line up.

It may not slip all the way down, because it probably won't be aligned with the oil pump driveshaft. To correct this, just bump the starter gently (or turn the crank by hand) and it should line up the shaft and drop right into place.

If you get it to run, and you can't get the distributor to turn far enough to get the timing right, you've still got it at least one tooth off. Repeat this operation and get everything in its proper place rather than moving the wires on the cap. You'll be much happier with the results.

ok it was out 180 degress .. it ran well enough to finish cam break-in it looks like though that i will not be able to turn the dist enough to time it... if i turn the dist clockwise it starts to die. if i turn it clockwise the idle increase's but it wouldnt idle at the setting i had originally on the carb idle screw. i was unable to turn it further clockwise due to the vacuum diaphram on the dist hitting the thermostat housing... oil preasure was great during break in but when we finished break-in and we were fooling around with the dist my wife said the oil preasure dropped alot at around 1k rpm.. it used to be about 1/4 the way on the gauge at that rpm and now its on the low marker... when i rev it up to around 2 grand it goes back up to about halfway...

Turn the distributor one tooth counter-clockwise.

ok... also, i played with the wire that goes to the oil sending unit it.. it idle's with the oil gauge at 1/4 and increase's to half by 2 grand... it sounds to me that im hearing a knocking sound that comes and goes. by the time i get under the hood to try and find it... it goes away.. its a dull sound.. not even sure if i recorded it that it you all would be able to hear it.

good news and bad news:

good news first:
1. ok i got the distributor in properly and timed the motor to 10btc.....not sure if that is right or not but it seemed to run best there.

2. The knocking i was hearing seemed to completely go away when the timing was set but comes back if i move the dist around.

3. the oil presure seems normal at idle now for some reason...(maybe it was an issue with the wire to my gauge. I took it off and cleaned the contact and rerouted it)

now for the bad news:

2. I have dirty (almost could say it contained a tiny bit of oil but was i would say about 90% clear) water coming out of both tail pipes (Im not sure when the puddle's appeared...my wife and I were watching under the hood during breakin. The truck does not appear to be smoking when its running.. maybe a bit of white hard to say because its cold outside.

I checked the oil and it only contains oil and was not foamy and did not smell of fuel and registered full....

I looked at the radiator and the water apeared clear... a little bit of crud floating but did not look like oil whatsoever, maybe more like a few rust particles at the top. it smelled and tasted like antifreeze only.. (yes i did taste it). I did filter the antifreeze through a shirt before putting it in. This same stuff appeared after a recent water pump change then it went away in a few days. Maybe that is just sediment floating? oh ya and the radiator was completely full.

I know i accidentally spilled some water down into the intake ports on the heads when i took the intake manifold off.. Could this be what it is? I was thinking maybe my intake manifold gasket slipped but i really doubt both sides did.. i was very carefull to let the adhesive set up..

Am I just worrying about a possible problem to much? After my oil change in the AM Should i just drive it some and see how it does?

What do you all think? Thanks again for all your valuable input... Hopefully soon I can walk away from this thread and just read other peoples! LOL

well my first thought was the intake gaskets. but if they didnt slip then it could have just been the extra water that went into the cylinders. has the water now stopped flowing out the tail pipe? if it hasnt maybe it is somethin to do with the intake gaskets.

My wife wants me to put my tools away and come to bed.. I will get back at it first thing in the AM.. I think i may be making my neighbors mad with all my loud running of the motor too lol...

Thank you for your reply Fordman. if the water continues to come out ill buy new intake gaskets.

Ok I changed the oil...

note on that.. the oil presure issue was likely a fram filter... once I got a new filter and oil in it the presure gauge was up at 3/4 at all times.

I finally took it out for a drive and there was no smoke out the back end.. I got home after about a 20min drive and checked all fluids and they were fine.. no leaks or anything..

The truck has tons of power and literally you only barely rest your foot on the throttle to get down the road..

its sounds really good other than my exhaust leak that was already there but there is 1 issue:

At idle occassionally im hearing a knocking.. It is not very rapid and its a dull sound... it doesnt do it all the time..give it a little gas and it goes away and then will idle fine...

temp is right on the money as well.

This cam makes the motor sound really nice... i wish i knew what the occassional sound was...
