7.3L Naturally asperated pulling power

Hey guys,
Any of you have experience with the mid to late '80s 7.3L trucks?
My neighbor ran across a deal for a couple of F250s with the 7.3L. He has a '72 I.H. 4x4 that he's thinking about a swap with.
His big use for the truck is heading into the mountains pulling a pretty good load of family and camping gear.
Since the 7.3L is an International engine, it's the only swap he'd consider. Every time I mention Cummins, he scowls at me. :lol:
I'm thinking he needs a later model turbo unit.
He wants to set it up to run on vegie oil.
What do you all think?

I had a 93 7.3 non turbo automatic trans and i belive it was non electronic and it would maintain speed fine just too a little while to get there,loaded or unloaded didnt make much differecne.i sold that one and bought a 2000 7.3 turbo 6 speed and was happy with acceloration and pulling power loaded,to me a turbo is the only was to go.i dont know much about running on veggie oil but i know the when the first diesel was made back in 1890s vegtable oil was the fuel of choice,Diesel fuel was a waste of gasoline back then and there was no use for it until it was descovered that the diesel would run on it and the oil companys started sell it as the motors started selling more.

It's an excellent engine that'll pull quite a load, but it really depends on the expectations of the driver. If he expects to pull a 35ft travel trailer up Mt. Mother-F***er @ 85mph then it's not going to cut the mustard with him.

I think his goal would be to keep up with "trailer legal" speeds while pulling about 7,500# of camping gear & family, up highway 50.
