Need help with first motor swap!
Hey, in a few weeks i am going to attempt my first motor swap and i need advice as to what all goes into this. what all has to come off, does the trans have to be pulled as well? I am taking out a 300 i6 and swapping it for a 240 i6. im not sure what all has to be done. also, it has a 3 speed on the floor.
Thanks, nate

just the enigne is all the needs to come out. disconnect and drain the radiator. pull the radiator. remvoe the heater hoses. remove the fuel lines and wiring. remove the gas pedal linkage. remove any vacuum hoses that dont stay with the enigne. remove the exhuast pipe.

Re: Need help with first motor swap!
I have to ask, why are you going from a 300 to a 240?
The 300 is twice the engine that a 240 is. More torque, more horsepower, and probably about the same fuel mileage.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
That's not an oil leak
That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

The 240 is no slouch, just not a hot rod. It will pull one hell of a load. I would not care which one I had if I could get one. My Daily Driver is costing me so much in gas that I am having a hard time getting it the parts it needs.

Re: Need help with first motor swap!
alright, it doesnt seen that difficult.
The only reason that I'm going from a 300 to a 240 is because my 300 needs some major work right now and i just dont have the money to fix it, so i found a 240 thats in good running condition for free that i'm going to use until i can totally rebuild my 300.

Re: Need help with first motor swap!
Now I do it just a littel different because I have a bad back and hate working under the truck.
I pull the hood, drive shaft, exhaust at manifold, wiring, clutch linkage and transmission rods and pull the engine transmission out together. That way I can separate them on the floor and have it a lot easier putting in the new clutch or whatever else I will do to it. This is about like Holley or Edelbrock. Split as to how people do it.

Re: Need help with first motor swap!
depends if my lift goes high enough I pull a manual tranny and engine together. Autos I leave the tranny in place.

Re: Need help with first motor swap!
Walhalla SC! Not heard that in a while
. I worked at Oconee Nuclear off and on for about 10 years. We ate in Salem many a times not far from you. Lovely country. Always came and went by Scenic hwy 11. I worked on putting in the main electric generators at Bad Creek numbers 1 and 2. Swear to this day I saw Willie Nelson walk out of a store with a case of Bud lite near the house we all rented while working at Bad Creek.
Worked at Jocasee Hyrdo a lot as well.
I guess I have a pretty good lift. It was giving to me by a friend who wanted one that breaks down. Plus I have not pulled an engine from a 4x4 with large tires and lift as I am sure that would make a big difference. Though I might would let the air out of the tires since I hate working under a truck trying to line up everything.

Yea, I live on Hwy 11 between Salem and Walhalla. I also worked a bad creek project. I worked on the west dam.And the guy you thought was Willie, That was more than likely Hippie Joe. Was he driving a nice 70 SS Nova.My dad retired from Oconee Nuclear Station. Small world like Salem SC.cdeal28078 wrote:Walhalla SC! Not heard that in a while.
