Tell me about the Inline 6 cyl engines.
Hey guys, I picked up a '67 mustang today. Originally it came with a 200 6 cyl engine. It now has a 250 6 cyl that came from a '69 falcon or mustang.
1. Are those the same engine just different bore and stroke or are they completely different?
2. Next question: Are these engines a different family than the 240 and 300 engines?
3. Is this 250 a decent engine?- I've heard lots of good things about the 300's
I've always been a FE guy. I'm going to eventually put a FE into the mustang but it will have to wait a while until I finish school.
4. Last question: The car is just running open exhaust manifold right now. I need to put an exhaust on right now so I can cruise it and get it registered. What's a good sounding setup for these inline engines that won't cost too much? Would a glass pack sound okay-I don't really want to spend $$$ since I will have to re-do it when I swap the engine.
Thanks guys

Re: Tell me about the Inline 6 cyl engines.
Well I don't know much about the motors but the exhaust I can relate to. Cheap would be cherry bombs but they are loud and they drone at some cruising speeds. A buddy put some on his crown vic it gave him headaches and the sound got annoyin. But that was his two cents. All glasspacks are basically the same from cherry bombs to summit glasspacks to purple hornies. Flowmasters are not all that get either honestly. Dynomax are not bad but a bit pricy at about $80. I have heard that thrush mufflers are really good. Which means good price $30 and great sound at wot and at cruising speeds. So I would recommend thrush mufflers any one of them really but I like the turbo series the most. Hope that helps some.

144,170,200 and 250 are almost identical the 250 s the weird one. Different head and slightly taller block. If you put a small six in a truck it will be death to it. Low on torque meant for light cars.

Re: Tell me about the Inline 6 cyl engines.
As said above on the Mufflers. I do like the sound of Thrushes. The Mufflers I tend to get when I can is mini Turbo Mufflers about 40 from everyone Glass pack filled no drone noise husky sound on a FE with a non cop annoying idle.
The Turbo name comes form the Corvair Turbocharger Muffler. One of the best flowing mufflers of the late 60s. Expensive but the turbo had 2-1/2 pipes so good flow with no fiber glass in them. All the imitation ones have fiberglass that burns out after a few years. The originals none.

mrlevatt,
I think Dragon answered most of your questions. I'll add that your 250 is a dependable little 6. We've got one in the 71 Ranchero with over 100K on it (never rebuilt) still going strong! And I had one in a 71' Maverick that was the same way (still running when I sold the car with over 100K on it).
Getting hard to find parts for them though, we just picked up a used 250 last year (Granada block) for $200.00.

My 250 has a 1 barrel carb on it right now. Would it pay to dig up a 2 barrel carb somewhere?

Re: Tell me about the Inline 6 cyl engines.
Not on that engine the intake is part of the head and does not come off. It flows really bad. Many years ago they made a manifold that went on top of the stock one and put 2-2 barrels on the small 6. You had to machine the entire top off the intake so all the runners were exposed then the manifold was bolted on. I only ever saw one in a catalog. I did machine the intake off of one so only the port runners were exposed. I was going to try 6 side draft carbs on it then lost interest in it as racing season and started and I had Srokers to build.

Yeah. Search for clifford performance. I know they have headers for the big six, don't know about the little one.
Dragon: could a guy graft an SU or side draft Weber onto one with ease? either via an elbow or opening one side of the manifold?
I've got the 300 and like it, and once knew a gal that had a mustang with a 250. wonderful car but for the automatic trans.
do look at clifford, and there's also a fordsix forum, but it's difficult to join
*edit*
Back in the day people used to split the manifolds for the sixes four and two on dual pipes for a 'V8ey' sound.

Re: Tell me about the Inline 6 cyl engines.
The welding on the side of the intake to make the carb mounts caused the head to distort severely. The welder I used was a the only professional cast Iron Welder in Denver. He was the Foreman at General Iron works that my family was founding members of.
It would lend itself to EFI real easy. The runner tops are fairly thick and would allow the machining for the injectors with any major metal build up.
