1972 F-600 Fuel Tank into a 1971 Ford F-100?

Post by comitatus1 »

The title pretty much says it all.

I have an old, broken down F-600 in my back yard that still has some good parts on it and was trying to figure out what to keep and what to get rid of.

I took the gas tank out of it and it appears to be very similar to the gas tank in my '71 F-100. I suppose I could take the one out of the F-100 and see if it fits but I thought someone here might save me the trouble.

One thing that is different is that the tank in my F-100 has a vent line running back to the filler tube and the one from the F-600 doesn't. I don't know if that makes any difference or not.

Thanks in advance, I really enjoy this forum.

The vent line on the passenger side top of the tank runs to a charcoal canister on the right front frame rail near the core support. The filler necks and caps are different between vented and non-vented tanks.

the in cab tanks were used in F100 -F600 up into 1975 or 76. not all tanks are exactly the same though. in the F100 trucks and maybe the F250 trucks in 1970 i think it was had the emissions gas tank put in for emissions regulations. the 1971 F250 did not have the emissions tank. becasue it was classified as a larger truck or soemthing like that. so the F600 also did not get the emissions tank. there were also two different nonemission tanks. the 64-69 tanks had three botl holes in the top flange to bolt the tank to the cab. and the bottom of the tank fit into saddles on the floor of the rear cab mount bolts. the 70-72 tanks had five bolt hole across the top flange and two botl holes on both ends to bolt the tank to the cab back floor.
now there were also suppose to be 2or 3 tank sizes. 17.5 18.5 and 19.5 or something like that. i think the emissions tanks were smaller than the nonemission tanks. you can use any size tank you want in your truck. inside the cab. you just have to be able to bolt it down. now here is the most important part of using a nonemissions tank in your truck. yo umust use the filler neck that matches it and the vented gas cap that fits that filler neck. because the emissions tank vents through that extra line going through the passenger floor. i hope that covered it. and all of my statements might not be 100% correct excpet for the use of the vented gas cap with the nonemissions tank.
