The 4BT Cummins would probably be a better candidate, imo.

Believe me; I've been keeping an eye out around here. I can buy a beater running dodge with a 12v 6bt around here for about $2500, but 4bt's are few and far between.

I have a dream about a diesel bump. I want a '69 3/4t crewcab, then stretch the frame and make it a longbed dually. I would swap in a Cummins 12valve or a Powerstroke, probably a Powerstroke becasue i have a issue with putting a motor that was used as a dodge motor in a Ford,. Put a 6 speed manual behind it and make about 500hp. Tow anything and have a bad a$% one of a kind bump. Ahhh dreams :D

Does that have the Standyne (Sp?) Rotary pump on it (with all the fuel lines in a circle on the back) if so, those are pretty easy to pull off and a good injection shop can rebuild them pretty reasonable

The Cummins is a MUCH better motor than the PowerSmoke.

I know and i do really like the cummins motor but it seems like every joe, jack, and jim has a hot rod Cummins truck. I though it would be cool to do something different.

Perkins is not a bad engine. It surely rates above a Detroit 8.2! I bet it has either a Stanadyde, or a Lucas CAV pump. Neither is very desirable, but there's other pumps that will bolt in its place. I hear ya on the Powerstroke thing. I've been toying with the idea of a Ford/ New Holland 6.6 litre from an early 90s F600. That way it keeps the Ford in a Ford heritage. 8) They are kinda heavy(almost 1200 lbs), so it's better suited for an F250 or bigger.

I was even thinking about an old I-6 Diesel out of like a early 70s Ford 8000 tractor. However i dont know much about these engines or how well they would respond to a hi-po mods and highway driving demands, would be very cool if it would work out well.

I've always heard great things about Perkins diesels. From what I've heard the 4 cylinder Perkins that were used in a lot of the Massey-Ferguson tractors back in the day was one of the best deisels ever. My step-dad had one he swore would run on rusty water. :) Also, everyone I've ever known to have a 7.3 Powerstroke loved them. Had lots running around in my family, and no problems except with peripherals, even on the ones that have close to 400,000 miles on them. Keep in mind that when you say "Powerstroke" you have you pick of several very different motors that have been under that label. Everything after the 7.3 has been crap, I understand. And if you put anything but a Ford in a Ford, you have issues, IMHO.

Edit: I know that most, if not all, diesels are produced by companies other than the Big 3. So, I'll change that to "You shouldn't put anything in a Ford that was ever used in a Dodge or a Chevy."

Thanks for all the replies guys! And for the record, from what I understand 90% of Ford trucks outside of the U.S. use/ used Cummins power, as well as most anything bigger than the light duty line of trucks, so I would argue that plenty of Fords use Cummins diesels. If I am wrong somebody please call me on it, but that is what I've heard before. I think I'd be ok with anything but a 6.5 GM diesel. That would be just wrong....

I agree it would take an absolutly SICK person to use a 6.2 or a 6.5 gm diesel as anything but a boat anchor. . It is true what was said about the Powerstrokes. I would use a 01 or 02 model year 7.3 powerstroke because these seem to be the smoothest running and also they where the highest rated hp (250hp) and tourque (500 lbs-ft) from the factory. I would love to find a wrecked '01 or '02 superduty dually with a 6 speed to use as a donor truck. Then I would have all of the electronic hardware, engine, tranny, t-case, axels and suspension parts needed. It might be easiest to put a '69 Crew Cab on a Super duty chassis. What model year dually bed do you think would be the easiest to use and convert to look like a factory Bump dually bed, Of course I want to continue the bump down the side of the bed?
