Carb Issues!

Post by zentar »

Ive got a 1972 with a 360 and 2 bbl carb that I think is stock.Iam sure its been rebuilt before. It kinda hesitates when you first take off if you try to take off very fast and when its warm it is a little hard to start.Think its loading up cause it smokes some when it finally starts. Any suggestions from the carb guys because I am not a carb person.

If it is black smoke you see when it starts, it might be running rich. Try adjusting the mixture screws. I've heard one and a half to two turns out is good.

A blown power valve will also cause both problems. It lurks under a square,4-screw,cover on the underside of the carb below the floatbowl. SOME parts stores will let you get just the valve without having to buy a whole carb kit.

Black Smoke. I know there is a gas tank behind the seat but you sure can smell it loading up.

loading up too much unburnt fuel with the black smoke. the most experience i have had is to tell you to check the float and needle. to make sure they are working properly.

Hi all. I'm having the same problem on the same year and engin - 360 dbl brl. Starts fine when cold but is difficult to start when cold and blows black smoke, smells rich when it finally starts. My carb is a new rebuilt carb. Was the final analysis the fule mixture running rich and did making the above mentioned adjustmenst fix the problem.
Thanks.
