When it cuts out, take out your screwdriver and take off the top of the carb and look in the bowl to see if its empty. To me it sounds like stuck needlevalve.
The starter crashing off your ring gear is a seperate issue.

you should be able to just pump the throttle while looking down the carb and see if the accelorator pump is squirting fuel.
If it is, there's fuel in the bowl.

As I read the posts on "engine cuts out of no where", it was if I had written in. I have a 1972 F100 with 360 and automatic.
transmission. I had to replace the fuel pump about a month ago. Then it got to where it idled rough and cut off if I tried to
work the throttle. I have replaced the the accelerator pump, points, plugs, wires, rotary button, distributor cap, I don't remember
what else. It will start and run now, but when I put it in gear and give it some gas, it won't take the gas and cuts off. It
does start back up. I have taken the top off the carb. to make sure it was getting gas when I work the throttle. Right now,
I've given up. I just can't understand why it will start like it's suppose to, but dies when I put it in gear. All advice appreciated.

Fordman is correct. To much air, not enough fuel.

Things to check:
- Vacuum hoses
- Carb. mounting nuts (loose)
- Carb. base gasket
- Power brake booster (leaking internally)
- Intake manifold gaskets
- Intake manifold bolts (loose)

Might be time to rebuild the carb, could have blocked passages / main jets.

Another remote possibility is a transmission problem.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

Hey man I've had the same problem for quiet a while now ,I think i fixed mine hopefully.I found that it was only affecting one side of my engine (351w)so I actually this weekend pulled all of my push rods from that side and re adjusted my valve lash just to make sure all valves were opening and closing properly.I ran the engine and still the same problem .I overhauled the carb recently and found that one side of my ventri boosters were clogged so I blew out the ventri out with compressed air and nothing .I finally took another ventri booster from another carb and it sounds very good.Even though I blew out the booster it was still clogged.
Hope this might help

Some good reading on Duraspark setups from the Bumpwiki:

Duraspark - Overview

Duraspark - Troubleshooting
(under construction, not yet completed...but still lots of good info)
