dentside rear tank

Post by 1971ford »

So i've heard about the mustang II rear tank swap, but what about a dentside rear tank? Will it not fit because the dentside frame rails are wider, and the mustang will because the mustang frame is more narrow??

No. The wider width will not allow it to fit in our trucks.

Partially correct :D

Thanks abunch for the link! I did not realize Keith had put that page together!
It seems f100 4x4 dent rear tanks will indeed work, just not highboys or 2wd's.
I'll be on the lookout to pick one up. either this or a mustang tank, whichever i find first!
Another factory option for an auxiliary fuel tank which can be used as a bolt-on for the '67-'72 era of Ford pickups actually was an option during the '73-'79 era. Because the rear frame rails (from the rear of the cab on back) on the '73-'79 2WD trucks are 4" wider than the previous generation, the standard rear-mounted fuel tanks cannot be used. However, the '73-'77-1/2 4WD truck's frames were NOT wider....they are the same width as the '67-'72 generation and will fit the earlier trucks perfectly. These highboys still used the in-cab tank, but a plastic 20-gallon auxiliary tank was available which fit between the rear frame rails. It was filled from the side, so an access door would have to be fabricated on the bed side for refueling (see Fig. 17).

Think this may be in error. When I converted my '70 over to a 4x4 with a '75 f-100 frame, I had to drill new holes in the bed to mount it to the frame. Also the rear hitch wouldn't bolt up due to the frame being wider.

Perhaps Keith was referring to '73-'77 highboys only?
