Vin plate contradicting itself
It has been two years since I've been on here solely because my first 67' 250 was totaled by a uninsured red light runner. I just bought another VIN # F25YKA72493 and am heading to Texas to get it once I'm on leave from Kuwait. My problem is That according to your very helpful section on decoding the VIN the engine should be a 352 cid but on the third line of the plate the cert. net. h.p. is 172@4000rpm. The chart that you give says that the 352 is rated to give 208hp. So what gives for the difference. Now mind you I am the second owner This guy has warranty cards and other 67' documentation. Why the inconsistency with the hp stats. Thank you

in the late sixties/early seventies, motor companies started 'underrating' their horses and torque ratings for insurance purposes... thats what popped into my mind right off the bat

That was in 1971, in most cases.68muscletruck wrote:in the late sixties/early seventies, motor companies started 'underrating' their horses and torque ratings for insurance purposes... thats what popped into my mind right off the bat

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
That's not an oil leak

Re: Vin plate contradicting itself
The VIN plate is what was used for taxation and other things or it is what the Factory says. A Ford certified net hp engine is run if equipped on any model all the accessories, So an A/C PS, CA Smog gear equipped truck with the Radio and all the lights on is certified to put out what the Tag reads. So your 172 hp 352 puts out more than the 172 when everything is not being used. PS does not use hp unless turning. Your alternator is a 65 amp model puts out 910 watts, well 1 hp is 768 watts. So the radio off and the lights off and everything else off then the engine puts out more than the certified net.

Thank you for the insight. So would it be safe to assume " and we know what that does" that all other fords will have the difference in the engine output and what the tag says? Then the 300 that I had in my first 67 would say something much less than the 170hp that the engine rating would tell me. Thank you for the quick response I can't do anything with the trucks now but it sure was bothering me.
