1972 f250- flywheel gone bad..i think????????????
hello. i have a 1972 f250...i recently made a trip from PA to NC and made it only about half way....it was driving fine until all of the sudden it started making all these wierd chirping noises and it wouldnt accelerate....it lost all power and i had to pull it on over..
once i pulled it over.. it stalled out... i tried cranking it up again and it made an even louder chirpiing noise .. so i popped the hood cranked it again and noticed that the fan was barely moving around... and the chirping i think was coming from the belts sliding on the pulleys......i thought that maybe the started solenoid perhaps didnt disengage from the flywheel and tehn got hot and siezed... but i popped the starter off and it looks just fine...
i have had to change out 3 starters in the last 1.5 yrs because the gear gets ground down to nuthing before too long....it has a fresh starter in it ...
i cant figure it ou... i felt around the flywheel and theres alot of metal shavings....
can someone please help me here cause i need this truck to get back home... or else im **** out of luck..
how do you change a flywheel??????????????????????????
or can anyone help figure whats wrong
-engine wont turn over
-loud chirping noises while turning the ignition
-wil sometimes trurn over but barely and only if i half the gas to the floor
please help me

Change the flywheel get a tranny jack or gain a lot of muscle. Get a clutch disc alignment tool.
DRop the driveshaft, remove the tranny, You can do this with the bell housing on or off. Remove the pressure plate and clutch disc remove the center 6 bolts that hold the flywheel on and you are apart.
Now 3 starters in how many years Flywheel why it chirps when cranking teeth binding. Why is does not run Not caused by flywheel start issue.
You need timing light,
Check good or bad
fix if bad
check points and gap.
Condenser can be bad
Coil could have fried, rare and it happens.
Check fuel when you push on the throttle linkage while looking in the carb
Low fuel pressure,
clogged fuel filter,
Check there and get back to us.

most likely fuel for dying. Get the flywheel done so you can test it.

Remove the transmission, unbolt old flywheel / bolt on new one, reinstall transmission. (Allot of work)how do you change a flywheel??????????????????????????
or can anyone help figure whats wrong
-engine wont turn over
-loud chirping noises while turning the ignition
-wil sometimes trurn over but barely and only if i half the gas to the floor

So... The engine turns over slowly making chirping noises. It will run barely if the gas is to the floor?

Is the chirping a metal to metal sound, or is it belt squeal?
Automatic or manual transmission? What engine?
Suspected problems:
- Broken camshaft --> Pull a valve cover, crank the engine, and look for all the valves moving.
- Jumped timing chain --> Set #1 cyl to TDC and check where your rotor is pointing to.
- Seized water pump or impeller problems --> Take off the belt and see how the WP turns.
- Fuel pump arm / lever came dislodged from the pump --> Check for fuel delivery to the carb.
Strange....

Engine
Alternator
Water pump
P/S pump
A/C compressor clutch bearing
Transmission pump
Remove all of the belts, and if it still won't turn over, you've got BIG problems!!!

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
That's not an oil leak
That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

Re: 1972 f250- flywheel gone bad..i think????????????
Exactly... How about some basic troubleshooting?
1. Pull the spark plugs, and try to turn the motor over by hand on the crank pulley won't turn over, next.
3. Remove the belts, try again, same? Next
4. Remove the converter access cover. Makes sure the converter - flexplate nuts didn't fall off and the converter slide back into the tranny housing. (I think you'll find your problem) if not, next
5. Remove tranny and make sure the engine turns over freely to isolate the tranny vs. the engine.
If it doesn't turn over easily without the plugs it won't want to run.
Good luck.

Really depends on where you are working on it at. I'd suggest renting a tranny jack for a C6 since they are heavy SOB's. If it's out in a gravel driveway you can double up two sheets of OSB to get a decent temporary platform to work off of.
Did you have any luck with the above troubleshooting stuff?

Re: 1972 f250- flywheel gone bad..i think????????????
i explained everything i could about the problems, noises and overall standings of the truck to my buddy's dad... he thinks it has nothing to do with the tranny or the flywheel or the torque converter.
he thinks that the bottom of the motor is going out/ siezing!
he told me to take the oil pan off and check the bearings( whatever that means)... im ont familiar with this stuff at all on the bottom of the engine
can anyone please help shed some light on this for me
id greatly appreciate it if perhaps someone could even give me a call.... i trust anyone of you ford truck fanatics over anyone i know
thanks again

Did you already try removing the belts, etc.?
Don't pull the oil pan off the motor until you've diagnosed the problem. What condition is the trans fluid?
