fe block plugs (freeze)

Post by stephen44 »

so these are really casting plugs - i know - but anyways...

I went to look at a 'rebuilt' 390 block the other night and noticed the plugs size said 1 3/4 (they were brass-well at least a golden color)) - i thought the correct size was 1 49/64 ?

I didn't buy the engine - thinking - if they didn't even know this .....was I right ?

- Stephen
thanks

Good day Stephen!

I'm glad you've asked this question. I actually noticed recently that the plugs in the FE Tom Lucas built for me are 1 and 3/4", not the oddball size I've been hearing about!

I've been meaning to ask Tom about this, but keep forgetting. It's not super important to me, since my plugs will either leak or they won't, and it's under warranty. But if I were putting something new together, I'd really want to know. I'll be curious to see how folks respond to your question!

so will I Robroy - to be honest this was not the only reason I did not buy the engine - he was selling it for a friend and could not really tell me what had been done and what parts had been put in it etc - so I just wasn't happy ...and the price was not a bargain worth the risk. There is absolutely no truth in the fact my wife said no way could i spend that amount :D

Good day Stephen!

It sounds like you made a great choice to not buy an engine that the seller knows nothing about! I've made the opposite choice before on several occasions and suffered the consequences.

I've heard others say that such engines are fine to buy, but unless the seller is somebody you know well or they have proof of its wonderful characteristics, the engine ought to be valued as a core.

I know that the 'correct' size is 1 49/64", but a 1 3/4" = 1 48/64". Does that 1/64" matter?
03 Chevy S10 - the daily driver
68 Ford F100 longbed - the tow pig / TLC project
78 Chevy Impala - the race car

I'm sorry if I ask lots of questions, there's just a lot of stuff I don't know (yet).

When I had my 352 rebuilt, they used the 1 3/4 plugs and all but one leaked. I had to pull the engine and replace them with the 1 49/64. I have not had any problems since. I would make sure the correct ones are in before installing. Just my :2cents:
