Back, and my 300 is running.

Post by heviarti »

I'll have to switch browsers before I can post pics, but there are things to say and ask.

I've got a Weber of indeterminate model (the sediment bowl is my idea) that does fairly good, however the electric choke sucks and it supplies just a little too much via the accelerator pump if you drop it all the way to the floor as fast as you can.

I get a rattle from 2100 to 2500, not sure, may be the mains going. need to fix the oil pressure sender, and figure out the proper dipstick... I may just drive it to Meridian Ford and tell them there it is... now get me the &*#!$ part.

I ended up having to have the head rebuilt, stelite seats installed, new valves... and the machine shop lost my rocker arms. So I installed a set of Harland Sharp roller rockers

An MSD, promaster coil, and a new distributor ( since not even the ford dealer could tell me how to make the one that was on there work) I should write ford and tell them if their dealer doesn't understand a ford product, they should buy me a unilite... :P

I need to find a new valve cover. I'm using a late style unit, but I had to press dents into it with a hydraulic press to clear the adjusters on the roller rockers... I think clifford offers a cast aluminum unit, but it's too tall; the throttle linkage won't clear. It's also too expensive.

I am thinking of building a new bottom end fit for supercharging. I'll need heavy rods... Probably custom made, and possibly some 390 pistons for a similar boost application. balance, forged crank, glyptol coat, blueprint... Then I get to figure out my bypass mess to make the supe/electric clutch setup viable.

still can't figure out where it's losing oil. It's not smoking blue.... so I doubt it's burning it. At this point the biggest pain in the butt is Ford's idea of electrical connectors. Threaded stock on the temp sender, but just a loose socket to press on to it? I have to reconnect the silly thing at least once a week...

anyway, pics on the way.

The cam gallery cover tends to leak at the back. Stock the rods will handle more boost than the heads and pistons can. Replace the push on sockets with a ring terminal with nut and washer.

My 390 does not burn a drop of oil it leaks it. Every where almost, Intake front and back and rear main is Bad. Every place else is done.

I don't look forward to removing the distributor again.... *SIGH*

I don't care if the stock rods will probably hold, I just figure... overbuild it once. The pistons? That's why I want the 390 pistons. There are much more intense application things supplied for the 390 than the 300... and since the diameter and pin to deck height are supposed to be identical...

I'll probably build it to handle twice what it'll ever see.

The pistons on a 390 are designed for different head shapes than a 300 chamber. You can get Hipo 300 Pistons.

I have yet to see a set that were as marked up as the stuff you can get for an eight. I may even see about some of these folks that make them custom. I've got a cousin who helped design a setup that uses a laser to deposit carbide on cylinder walls... I'm wanting to build this bottom end once. I may even opt for a dry sump... Rule 105: when you want go-kart, go aircraft.

Even if this one doesn't get the carbide, My mom's 230 flathead does. (itls the next rebuild project, and boy does it need it)

My 300 was supposed to have domed, high compression pistons installed, and supposedly has a Crane cam. When I pulled the head I found the stock cup style pistons, so I'm doubting it was actually cammed. It was also supposed to have stelite seats and didn't (valves were sucked in like darts from a kid's dart gun, and the seats varied 1/4 inch across the head) I'm just running it and waiting to see if the bottom end fails or what... @&*$! unidentifiable rattle... All my money is headed for the 4WD right now. New spindle locks and a rebuild on the front driveshaft.

If your bottom end is noisy it will be louder when under full throttle. The top end noise will increase with speed and be there when sitting still and usually louder when low on oil pressure. Piston sap noise is there all the time at compression stoke cycles.

My rattle is 2100 to 2500, only under load. full throttle makes it stop, at idle the only noise is generated by the water pump. When it starts leaking, I'll replace it. I may consider putting in a higher capacity oil pump os one is made.

Mine has to live on premium. When it gets rebuilt that will change.
