Towing Capacity

Post by coop »

Hey does anyone know what the towing capacity of a 70 F250 Camper Special is with a 390FE. I am thinking of buying a 24 foot travel trailer. :?

Myself, I find my '70 F-250 gets grumpy pulling more than 35,000 GCVW up more than 7% grade. Under 35,000 it behaves well as long as I have enough brake on the downgrades.

You need tires, brakes gears and common sense. You can safely move 80K with 20HP if you need to. My personal thought is if you need to ask a question along these lines you shouldn't be towing anything. Towing weight can be life and death in the wrong hands.

:yt: We moved 40,000 pound aircraft with a 302 in 8000 pounds of steel tow tractor and as it says above you have to know how to drive safely.

I pulled my F350 with my F250 up a pass with no real hassles. I pulled my 10,000 pound boom truck up the same pass with my 360 in my F350 and had no problems.

My father in law had a 53 m38A1 Jeep he put a 289 Special in. When they were moving his 14x70 mobile home onto his land they got stuck. He pulled the tractor and trailer out of the mud and back onto the road with the Jeep. I agree with the above. Trailer brakes set right and enough gear and traction and you can pull anything. You just had to watch what you are doing and use a lot of common sense.

My truck regularly pulls 25k lbs worth of tractor on a big three-axle trailer. Even with the fairly tired old 352, it doesn't struggle. You just need to know how to tow.
