Those cranks sitting out in the elements will soon be on boats to return as Toyotas...

Any reason for the huge rows of cranks?

That's purty. As for the cranks Iron scrap goes for a penny a pound and they need to come get them. Maybe they are testimonials to all the engines they rebuilt.

Dragon, Tony told me that a man from Mexico bought all the pistons that he had and it took him 2 months to get them all.

That is a lot of cranks. Looks like more than 10k to me though. A lot of money in scrap iron sitting there. Is that the company that has been in business since 64 or the company that messed up your short block?
If there mains were messed up with hand turning the crank sounds like the crank is messed up and/or it all needs line bored.
I don't know much about machining but something sure is not right with it.
I don't understand why a bore could not be .004 too small? I mean the pistons are always smaller than the bore by a certain spec rich leave room for the rings to compress right? So the rings were just compressed too far with no more room right?
Like I said though I don't know anything about machine works. lol

When you go over size on the pistons some idiots Lose the mind and miss set the the bore bar. Or they are drinking like a fish at 3 in the PM and they bore for your .010 pistons with .006 clearance to .012 or .004 under size. That means the piston will swell up and bind as it heats up. A .006 clearance becomes .003 to .002 when hot anyway so Bang the motor has real problems.

For a while we used to heat the pistons to 500 and get the running size then we new where to bore to. It is a real hassle handling hot pistons. But if KB said .004 and the piston grew to .003 you had a real problem. Our way meant we could bore for a true .003 clearance.

Yes a lot of money in scrap iron just sitting there, and ya it does look like more than 10,000 cranks.
The shop is Thompsons Engines, and they have been in business since 1964. The berings were the cheep ones I was told, the crank I just fine.

Dragon got it right with the bores and pistons with his explanation..

Thank You. Though this machine stuff is not for every one I was working on a BBC at 13 for a B/Altered as an apprentice. I did my first Flathead V8 at 15 after two FEs a 427 and a 390. I went to every race and sat with any racer that gave me a minute of time and hung out at as many machine shops that I could. So by the time I was 16 and could drive I had a serious education in engines. I appreciate the time everyone gives to read my long winded explanations. I give them in the hope that everyone here can learn and build from basic strong FEs to Monster FEs.

Dragon,
It is always gratifying when you can help some one in need. To me anyway.
You must have loved doing motors, and seeing all that can be done to one from stock. My dad has always had a mechanic shop where I would get my hands dirty quite a bit. I didn’t like it very much, because dad started me by washing all the motor parts and brackets with gas, I remember once when I sat on some gas, I had no idea until my buttocks started burning. Mom got mad at dad, and dad just started laughing. When I was 13 dad helped me build my first motor it was a 429 for my 1971 bump, which dad ended up giving to my older brother :dk: broke my heart. Since then I've always needed to get the same exact sportcustom short bed truck. Of course I'm hitting 40 now, and I'm finally getting my truck finished only not with the big 429, it’s a 398 if I’m correct.
Ohh!! The truck goes to Thompsons Engines tomorrow :woohoo: can't wait.

A 390 .010 over is a 391
.020 is 393
.030 is 395
.040 is 397.3
.050 is 399
.060 is 401

Arghhh washing parts with gas.
I feel for you behind.
