Bottom end questions

Post by 71fordkid »

So im gonna pull the 302 out of my ford when i swap bodies. Im gonna be fixing a pan leak, rear main, and putting a fresh coat of paint on it.

I've un-intentionaly run this motor pretty low on oil due to the oil leaks. when i pull the pan and do the gaskets/seals, im going to pull the crank out and check out all (crank, rod) the bearings. If thier bad, can i just replace them if the crank isnt scored? I'm just worried about spinning a bearing this fall when i make my annual trip to Long beach. What else should i check?

yes you can replace just the bearings. you must get the same size bearings that it had in it. either oversized undersized or normal /standard. they should be stamped on the back of them.

If you ever got to the point you needed to put 3 quarts in it all your friction surfaces should be looked at. At any one time above 3000 rpm at least 2 quarts are spread out through the engine meaning 2 + missing 3 quarts means one in the filter one in the lifters and heads and none in the pump.
