Dizzy and Oil Pump questions

Post by ionlyswingping »

Hi guys,

I've got a two parter. The first question, I installed an aftermarket HEI style dist and timing seems dead on. After the truck is at normal operating temps, it will not restart and shows no spark after the dist. The company I purchased from sent out a new coil, but no change. Any ideas?

Second, I went to install the old points dizzy to isolate the new part as the problem and my oil pump drive shaft loosened up and dropped. Has anyone ever been able to fish this out without pulling the motor and dropping the oil pan?

Any ideas would be great.
Thanks,
Josh

Thanks Dragon,
It's a 302. The new dist. will be relaced or money refunded. The duraspark uses a separate stand alone coil, not the in cap style right?

Right on the two part. I have worked on many a HEI at of all places a Ford dealer because the local Chevy dealer could not work on them, A Duraspark II coils is as hot as a HEI coil and the good thing is it can fire the hotter e-coil systems where with HEI you are stuck with HEI coil designs.

What brand is the HEI dizzy.

bonus points if you upgrade to the TFI style coil. Hotter spark & no ballast resistor required.

Like Dragon stated, it's the module, not the coil. If you're stuck with the HEI, get an ACDelco module & use the silicone provided for the base of the module.Make sure the mounting surface is clean before you install it. Heat flat kills them things.

Between the magnet on a stick and a porch-picker, I've done that four or five times. Haven't had to drop the oil pan yet.
