sounds electrical to me, but i'm not an expert. does it just die at once or peter out? grounds, coil, combination of weak alternator, bad battery. i don't know. just throwing things out there.

Well, to be honest im not sure, the way my exhaust is set up it is extremely quiet at idle, and it tends to die at stop lights, the only time i can hear it running is when its off idle, i don't know if it spudders out, i believe it just dies, the alternator is new, so is the battery, Maby it would help if you guys knew my setup,

Basically i have a stock 240, recently the head was rebuilt, Ive replaced the carb, starter, ignition switch, new plugs, alternator, fuel tank, and fuel pump, solenoid and the regulator, albeit most of the parts ive replaced have been remans

Maybe i missed this but define "won't start back up" when it dies. Does it sputter? Anything? Is it only cranking it over and over again? When it dies, does it have gas in the carb or is it dry?

Sometimes it sputters, or starts up for a few seconds and cuts right back off, but most of the time all it does is crank over and over, i would think the carb has gas in it, but ive never checked, useually when i go out the next morning and start it, it fires right up the first turn,

Have you tried to remove the gas cap as was suggested? I have 98 Neon ( :shh: I know but it gets great mileage) and a few years ago it started doing just what you described. On a trip down to Albq. it pulled the same thing on me, had it towed to a garage and checked out. They couldn't find anything. On the way back home the next day stopped off to fill up the tank, when I loosened up the gas cap it sucked air for like 2-3 seconds. It was about to die on me when I stopped for gas. Replaced the gas cap and it hasn't done it to me since. Just an idea.

tryed the gas cap, no difference, but my dad just took it for a test drive, and it broke down on him, so i went and picked him up, while he was on the side of the road we pulled the fuel line off the carb, no fuel, so we cranked it with the line off, barely any fuel was being pumped, so were thinking the rebuilt pump has went out, we got a replacement and it should be in tommorow

well there ya go. No fuel.
I think you did say you replaced almost everything fuel wise. Try a new pump, if not that, trace every inch of the fuel line and check for anything. Also make sure your new filter isn't clogged again.

Next time it happens, get out, remove the gas cap, dump a shot glass full of fuel down the carb and see if it starts.
Fuel pumps do not work intermittantly.

i did replace everything but the metal lines, but, my pump and my carb were both re manufactured, im still not happy with the quality of the rebuild on the carb, if my pump isn't the problem im almost sure its the carb, im hopeing its the pump, we start back in school next Monday and im hopeing to get to drive this beast
